Q: will this unit allow me to use a usb drive to load linux?
A: If you choose Linux Mint, the drivers will be included in it. I intend buying this laptop during Black Friday, and will make a recovery usb of the Windows 10, then I'll install Linux mint instead. I'll then have a really nice machine, with long battery life and without all the drag of Windows. I also expect it to run faster with a lighter operating system. Of course, you will have to come to Linux Mint for support, unless you have a Linux Mint friend. TIP: Also, you will have to navigate through Windows 10 to configure the UEFI to accept your Linux usb. You'll need to find and turn off 'Fast start/boot' and also 'Secure Boot'. You want to keep it UEFI and not LEGACY, if at all possible, while installing Linux. (Once I get Linux Mint successfully installed, I probably won't ever put Windows back on the machine.)
A: Yes, the computer would be great with using the Silhouette cutting machine.
A: Yes, this notebook would be ideal for a 12 year old. It has Integrated wireless 802.11 AC and can be connected to the internet. You can access Google on this unit once it is connected to the internet. You would be able to play some simple games depending on their requirements. For example this notebook would not be able to run hardcore PC games that require a lot of graphics and processing power. This unit can be connected to any USB or wireless printer and you can play Youtube videos on this unit once it has an internet connection.
Q: Can this download and run R and RStudio (statistics software)?
A: This laptop comes in S-mode by default, which is a version of Windows 10. You would not be able to install anything unless you take it out of S-mode (see my review). R-Studio says it requires 32MB of RAM, this laptop gives you 2GB, so you would be plentiful there. Other than that, this laptop is for basic use, so if you're expecting a fast experience, look elsewhere.
Q: My son Wants a computer that he can play roblox and fortnite on. Will this one work for that
A: The laptop will be able to play basic and light games like, Roblox, it will not support Fortnite because of hardware limitation.
A: Playing Fortnite or any gaming on here would be an awful experience and is highly not recommended.
Q: Can you use a printer with this with usb hookup?
A: Keep in mind that most modern printers, for the sake of iPhone and Android printing, do it wirelessly, and this laptop is perfectly compatible with wireless printing over your wifi network. Also, and this is probably more relevant, this has two "legacy" USB A ports - the kinds laptops have had for over 20 years - it isn't limited to the new tiny USB C cable port. SO you can use the existing USB printer cable you have with your existing old-style non-wifi printer, which is actually a big help. Otherwise you would have needed to buy an adapter dongle.
A: Everything is soldered, there is no upgrade path for this machine. You can install a micro SD to add additional storage.
