Sir Adrian Boult - Symphonies 5 & 6 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Sir Adrian Boult began his long association with the music of Vaughan Williams in 1918 when he conducted A London Symphony earning praise from the composer. Thereafter Boult gave many first performances of Vaughan Williams's works including the 3rd, 4th and 6th symphonies and Job was dedicated to him. Boult also recorded all the symphonies extensively in the studio for Decca and EMI during the 1950s and late 1960s. The pastoral 5th symphony (1938-43) is considered a masterpiece based on Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress which some critics have suggested was a vision of peace for a war-weary nation, whereas the angry 6th symphony (1944-47) bears the marks of the war years in the opposite extreme, a portrait of a world laid to waste by a nuclear holocaust. Boult's performances here, caught live at London's Royal Albert Hall Promenade Concerts in 1972 and 1975, have even more adrenaline and excitement compared to their studio equivalents. Anthony Payne (Daily Telegraph) described the 1975 Prom performance of Symphony No.5 Inchone of the most taut and concentrated interpretations I have ever heard of the workInch. When it comes to Symphony No.6, Martin Cotton, the music critic and writer wrote Inchwhat Boult achieves in the four linked movements of Symphony No.6 is a sense of overall direction, and as he did in Symphony No.5, a strong feeling for the structure and emotional depth of the work'.

Czech Philharmonic - Smetana: Ma vlast - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The Czech Philharmonic and it's Chief Conductor and Music Director Semyon Bychkov present a new recording of Bedrich Smetana's masterpiece Ma vlast (My Homeland). The album celebrates both the bicentenary of Smetana's birth and, the start of 2024's Year of Czech Music which has been celebrated every ten years since Smetana's 100th anniversary in 1924. Ma vlast (1874-1878) is a potent symbol of the Czech Republic's turbulent political history and has played an important role in the Czech national movement. Contemplating the landscape, history, and legends of Bohemia, Ma vlast is best known for it's world-famous Moldau melody. For Bychkov, who was born in Russia before emigrating to the United States, and now lives in France, the question of 'the homeland' is particularly poignant - how to take pride in the best of it's heritage, while also coming to terms with it's darker pages. For the Orchestra to revisit this seminal piece with Bychkov, with whom it has developed such a close working relationship over the past few years, makes the recording all the more personal and topical. The Czech Philharmonic is one of the world's orchestral gems, recognised for it's rich tradition with the Czech masters as well as European repertoire. Semyon Bychkov who is internationally renowned for his interpretations of the core repertoire, began his tenure with the Orchestra at the start of the 2018/19 season. Together, they have so far recorded for Pentatone Mahler's First, Second, Fourth and Fifth Symphonies (2022-2023), part of the complete Mahler cycle to be released by the tag. The Orchestra is also featured on the album Folk Songs (2023) recorded by Magdalena Kožena and Sir Simon Rattle.

Moondog / Ponty / Lakatos - Piano Trimba - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The project InchPiano TrimbaInch by Dominique Ponty (piano) and Stefan Lakatos (trimba), gathering miniatures composed by Moondog during his life, is remarkable for more than one reason. On the one hand, because his performers have known and worked for many years with the composer. On the other hand because this very sensitive recording brings together known pieces and unpublished pieces of Moondog, most of which are dedicated to Dominique. In perfect resonance with the work of Moondog, Dominique and Stefanen are today the most authentic performers. The truly InchunheardInch character of these works, their faithful interpretation, attentive to every detail, make this record an indispensable testimony to the work of this luminous musician.
