During a meteoric course which lasted around two years, Band Apart made a mark in the bubbling No Wave scene in New York & Europe, yet the duet remains among the era's unsung heroes. Consisting of New York-based poet & performance artist Jayne Bliss, and Marseille-based musician/producer M. Mader, Band Apart released a mesmerizing, eponymous 4-track EP in 1981, showcasing Jayne's arresting vocals and lyrics, immersed in the hazy, mysterious atmospheres conjured up by Mader. While being very connected to the time and place of their creation, these songs were ahead of their time. One of the first bands to join the Crammed Discs roster, Band Apart performed shows in New York and Europe, and went on to record a full-length album in 1983 which contained cult favorite tracks such as InchO My Beautiful SongInch and InchMarseilleInch. Sadly, the band fell apart shortly after the album's . This vinyl reissue comprises the initial EP as well as 5 tracks from the album. All tracks were freshly remastered from the original tapes. Phil Collins might be swinging away the late 1990s, but in 1981 he was sharpening his pop chops, from his first solo offering to this, the first Genesis album to break the hallowed million-copy mark stateside. But Abacab wasn't entirely about charting Top 40 singles (InchNo Reply At All,Inch InchMan on the Corner,Inch and the title track); it still exhibited some late-stage evidence of a trio courting the art-rock muse that had graced it's past (InchWho Dunnit,Inch InchDodo,Inch InchKeep It DarkInch). However, by 1983's eponymous follow-up, the hit factory that was Genesis in the mid- to late-1980s was operating full steam ahead, and the angel Gabriel's specter had all but vanished.
