About this product

John McCabe (1939-2015) was renowned as both a pianist (a Haydn specialist and supporter of many contemporary composers) and as a composer of very fine music in several genres. In 1985 he visited EMI Studios in Sydney Australia to make this album of music by Australian and American composers. However for several reasons it was put to one side and when the studio closed it was believed that all copies were lost. Last year a cassette copy was found, transferred and remastered. It is a wonderful collection of works, performed with McCabe's usual dazzling virtuosity and deep musicality. The album comprises works of differing styles best summarized as 'post-modernist' - individual, inspired, contemporary but not unfriendly to audiences; some are impressionist such as the title track by Peter Sculthorpe; jazz-inspired (Rochberg's Carnival Music) and all are fine additions to McCabe's recorded legacy.

Various Artists - Amore la Sol Mi Fa Remirare - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

This album features a beautiful program of works from the Renaissance for Soprano, accompanied here by lute, which was probably the most favored instrument for this during the Renaissance. Nadia Caristi graduated with degrees in classical piano and singing before going on to explore and ultimately dedicate herself to the historically informed performance practice of the Renaissance and Baroque vocal repertoires. She carries out an intense concert activity singing as a soloist and in ensemble, and has performed in several of the most prestigious Early Music festivals in Italy, Europe, and Asia. Massimo Marchese is known worldwide as one of the most refined performers of his generation. His long career allowed him to play and collaborate with many famous early music ensembles and to perform soloist concerts in several foreign countries. More than 18 record publications, among them 8 as soloist, let Massimo Marchese be proud of one of the smartest curriculums concerning his instrument.

Pergolesi / Petersen / Prandi - Messa in Re Maggiore - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

New light on Pergolesi! This album sheds light on a lesser-known aspect of the great Italian composer, offering two masterpieces in their first modern edition and first recording the Mass in D major and the mottettone Dignas Laudes. Both editions are the outcome of recent musicological research carried out by the Centro Studi Pergolesi in Milan, and show a facet of Pergolesi - his energetic and solemn character - that complements and amplifies the dramatic and introspective moods of his most renowned sacred works. This Arcana inaugurates a collaboration with the Ghislieri Choir & Consort and celebrates the fifteenth anniversary of the ensemble, which specialises in eighteenth-century sacred repertory and has already recorded works by Galuppi, Jommelli, Perez (Il Mattutino de' Morti) and Handel (Handel in Rome 1707) for Sony-DHM. The soloists on this recording, conducted by Giulio Prandi, are the soprano Marlis Petersen, one of the leading sopranos on the international scene, and a quintet of young Italian singers who already perform in the most important and prestigious European venues.
