About this product

The greatest Czech composers - Dvorák, Smetana, Janácek, Suk, Martinu... And anyone else? Yes, Vítezslav Novák! Who was he? A pupil of Dvorák's, later on one of the most distinguished music creators and teachers on the domestic scene. A Post-Romantic and the first of the generation of Modernists profoundly inspired by Moravian folk music. This year's 150th anniversary of Novák's birth affords the opportunity to take a closer look at his oeuvre - and to rediscover that which has been overlooked. The idea of making the first studio recording of the Piano Concerto, a remarkable early work by the 25-year-old Novák, was enthusiastically endorsed by the superb Czech pianist Jan Bartoš. Due to it's intimate nature, At Dusk, Op. 13, a cycle of miniatures for solo piano, inspired by J. S. Machar's poetry, stands in contrast to the concerto's virtuosic stylization. The tone poem Toman and the Wood Nymph may be deemed the most ambitious of Novák's symphonic works. As the composer himself put it, he strove to express an Inchuncontrollable torrent of wild passionInch, referring to the piece as an Inchorgy of soundInch and the ballad as a Inchdepiction of woman's demonic power over manInch. Jakub Hruša, a globally renowned contemporary conductor, invites us to rediscover Novák's music InchWe are obliged to perform it. His music is so profound and far-reaching that we simply cannot ignore it and let it gather dust in archives and remain buried in music history textbooks.Inch Album Tracks 1. Concerto in E minor for Piano and Orchestra (1895) 2. At Dusk Op. 13 (1896) 3. Toman and the Wood Nymph, Symphonic Poem After a Bohemian Legend for Large Orchestra, Op. 40 (1906/07)

Dvorak / Kahanek / Hrusa - Piano Concertos - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

An extraordinary constellation of artists is one the major attributes of the new recording - a Czech conductor and a Czech soloist, and a German orchestra, who have a Czech sound in their DNA. All three of them enjoy great renown in both the European and global contexts. Symbolical is the selection of the album's repertoire - the same world war that deprived the players of the German Philharmonic in Prague of their home and that in 1946 gave rise to the Bamberger Symphoniker in Germany, made Bohuslav Martinu leave his country and Europe itself. The composer wrote his Piano Concerto No. 4, InchIncantationInch, in New York in the twilight of his life, when it was evident that he would never return to his homeland. The connection between Ivo Kahánek and Martinu is profound indeed, with the pianist having played the Incantation at concert halls all over the world. The performance of the Incantation in Bamberg, captured on the present album, was lauded by the critics as revelatory. The studio recording of Antonín Dvorák's Piano Concerto (based on Sviatoslav Richter's account) ranks among the most remarkable returns to the composer's original version of the work, forbearing the Incheffective and virtuoso improvementsInch carried out by it's later arrangers. It showcases the tender and melodious music of Dvorák, who always strove to emphasise cordial expression, giving it preference to instrumental impression.
