Along with the Etudes and en blanc et noir of 1915, Claude Debussy's three sonatas constitute the last will and testament of the composer, who died in Paris on March 25, 1918. It's not due to being the final works in Debussy's chronology that confer this privilege on them so much as the fact that they perfectly manifest the composer's ideal of French music as distinguished by Inchclarity, elegance, simple and natural declamation which seeks, above all, to please.Inch How could one better describe these masterpieces? Along with these sonatas, the musicians on this album have included two Rhapsodies, the Danses sacree et profane, as well as the haunting flute solo Syrinx. Album Tracks 1. Sonate Pour Violon Et Piano 2. Sonate Pour Flûte, Alto Et Harpe 3. Rhapsodie Pour Clarinette Et Piano 4. Syrinx 5. Sonate Pour Violoncelle Et Piano 6. Rhapsodie Pour Saxophone Et Piano 7. Danses Sacrée Et Profane Pour Harpe Et Quintette À Cordes

This disc consists almost exclusively of first recordings, combining a representative selection of Ludwig Hartmann's 'Lieder' (Songs) with five of his translations of operatic arias by Georges Bizet, Giacomo Puccini and Ruggiero Leoncavallo; a short extract from Wagner's Tannhäuser (premiered at Dresden in 1845); an aria from Schumann's Genoveva and three of his Goethe-Lieder (completed in Dresden), as well as three Lieder by the unjustly forgotten and only recently rediscovered composer Adolf Jensen.
