Black Gravel - DVD

In a small German village that now hosts an American military base, the still-smarting locals grudgingly but determinedly turn to the soldiers to sustain their economy. A black market trucker (Helmut Wildt) opts to rekindle things with an ex-lover (Ingmar Zeisberg) now married to a U.S. officer-but the dalliance will set up a tragedy he can't escape. Gritty effort, long suppressed for it's frank depiction of anti-Semitism, co-stars Hans Cossy. 113 min. Includes original and edited cuts. Widescreen; Soundtrack German; Subtitles English; audio commentary; edited cut. In German with English subtitles. BW/Rtg NR

Miami retiree/Holocaust survivor Mordecai Samel (Judd Hirsch) faced much he couldn't or wouldn't adjust to, between infirm spouse Fela (Carol Kane) and son Marvin (Sean Astin), with whom he always butted heads. After Marvin insistently swapped out his taped-together flip phone for an iPhone, the old man had to lean on young store rep Nina (Azia Dinea Hale) to navigate the inscrutable device-and had his world opened up in the process. Charming effort co-stars Stephanie J. Block. 102 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack English; Subtitles English; theatrical trailers.
