About this product
2017 . Blick Bassy formed his first band in Cameroon at the age of 17. Creating an inventive jazz fusion group inspired by local rhythms with three singers, all singing a different Cameroonian language. It was here that Blick began to reinvigorate Bassa as a language that could be used in modern music. After 10 years of performing with his band Macase - in which the group toured around Africa and Europe - Blick grew frustrated with the lack of infrastructure for an artist in Cameroon and decided to move to Paris. It was there, in 2005, that Blick started his solo career, He released his debut album Léman (fusing West African and Central African rhythms) in 2009 followed up with Hongo Calling (recorded in Brazil following Blick's research into the musical link between Cameroon and Brazil) in 2011.

Ata Kak's cassette Obaa Sima fell on deaf ears when it was self-released in Ghana and Canada in 1994. The music on the recording Inchan amalgam of highlife, Twi-language rap, funk and discoInchis presented with the passion of a Prince record and the DIY-bedroom-recording lo-fi charm of early Chicago house music. The astute self-taught song craft and visionary blend of sounds and rhythms has made the album a left-field cult favorite among adventurous listeners worldwide.

Imagine an African artist with the tenderly subversive touch of Bon Iver, the haunting falsetto of Skip James, the razor-like mind of Akala, and the inventiveness of Moses Sumney. You've just imagined Blick Bassy. Following his acclaimed album « Akö », Bassy delivers 1958, a tribute to the heroes who fought for the independence of his native Cameroun. It's focus is specific, but it's themes - the need for heroes, the relevance of history and the search for true identity - are universal. And the music works like a balm of seductive tenderness and sorrow. With it's back-to-the-future blend of voices and assorted guitars, cello, trumpet, keyboards and trombone, 1958 keeps faith with Bassy's unique style in contemporary African music, fed by his love for the soul of singers like Skip James or Marvin Gaye as much as for the traditional music of Africa. An album to thaw the heart and sharpen the mind.
