In Michail Travlos's second album dedicated solely to his own music, following on from the award-winning album PROGRESSIONS, he proves to be one of Greece's most interesting and convincing living modern composers. This album explores seven imaginative works. He has managed to create an exciting and often challenging personal voice that is always interesting and very appealing. In NIGHT VISIONS the listener experiences works of diverse styles and aesthetic perspectives. Even though most of the work titles are derived from a non-musical origin, Travlos's robust technique and fine-tuned elaboration of the music material ensure the preservation of the fragile balance between rationality and the sentimental nature, that governs the compositional procedure. Throughout the works, the common element in the composer's view is the meticulous exploration of intervallic qualities in terms of texture and time. As a famous music authority and critic once wrote, the life story of the Austrian composer Franz Schreker and the reception history of his oeuvre would have offered fine material for a magnificent novel with a musician as it's protagonist - if not for the fact that everything had actually occurred in real life his childhood spent in poverty; the difficult initial path to local prominence in Vienna; the breakthrough to superstar status in German-language opera houses; his appointment as director of the Berlin College of Music; his failure to resist the seductive powers of flatterers; the gradual loss of favor among audiences and critics that many seeming friends followed with malicious spite; and then the final blow, when the new »master race« turned the world upside down - all of this was fact, not fiction. Following the of several operas by Franz Schreker during past years on cpo (some of them in premiere recordings), our tag now turns to the orchestral works of a man who in some circles continues to be dismissed as a mere »sound magician,« even though he was a melodist and harmonist of the first water and had learned his craft so thoroughly at the Vienna Conservatory that he himself became a sought-after teacher. The present program traces Schreker's path from his studies with Robert Fuchs to his first enduring success - the captivating pantomime The Birthday of the Infanta (1908) after the fairy tale by Oscar Wilde, which definitely numbers among the finest creations of the musical art nouveau. 2018 . Solipsism, AKA Craig Murphy, has slowly but surely erected on the grand 'ol ambient/electronica corner a nice little bit of sonic real estate for himself. He's already graced the presence of labels such as txt and Databloem, collaborating with the former's head honcho Lee Norris as Ashtoreth's Gate and with Norris's Nacht Plank project, and kept busy since 2006 gracing all manners of digital imprints such as Herb Recordings and Ambidextrous. On Kismet, his debut for Carpe Sonum, Murphy let's the bells ring out and flags fly; well, more like reverberate, as the album trucks in an ever-cascading audiofall of beautiful, expressionist shimmers. Murphy's touch is exquisite, his cycling watercolors simultaneously a balm on the soul and a hair-raising trek across lonely, thin-air vistas. Rarely does 'ambient' music challenge the senses as well as tickle them. In that sense, Murphy manages, despite his chosen moniker, to forge stylistic connections with similarly-styled purveyors like the late Oophoi, and, more tellingly, David Parsons, whose taste for grandeur and epic scope Solipsism virtually revels in.
