The present is a live recording of 1942 from the opera house of the State Theatre of Saxony, the Semperoper, destroyed by bombing three years later and finally reopened in 1985. The opera chorus and orchestra are to be heard performing alongside an outstanding ensemble of soloists under the musical direction of Karl Böhm, then principal conductor in Dresden as successor to Fritz Busch. Sung in German to a text by Julius Hopp, the new production - advertised as being in it's 500th performance in mid-June 1942 - was created by Heinz Arnold, then Oberspielleiter (chief production supervisor) and post-war opera director to the Dresden State Opera. Stage sets and costumes (given as Trachten, InchoutfitsInch, work clothes or regional dress) were the responsibility of Adolf Mahnke and Richard Panzer. What little has survived as evidence of this historic staging suggests that it was strongly influenced by the Paris premiere. The Hispanic-Moorish elements of the stage façades clearly suggest the architecture of faraway lands. This thrill of the exotic is also to be found in the InchoutfitsInch and of course in the music. Georges Bizet thus combined and compared the charm of folklore with the (normally forbidden) deviant behavior of his characters. With their dusky harmonies, these psychologically convincing sequences of tuneful numbers hold the audience under their spell. The performance is an irresistible delight, especially in this realization under a maestro like Karl Böhm.

He was forty years of age in 1934, when he moved up the Elbe fromHamburg to assume direction of the Dresden State Orchestra and Opera. There, his sensitive yet dramatic style of conducting, his vigour and intellectual resilience, his feel for classical form and unerring sense of tempo (not to mention his strict disciplineand utterly infallible hearing) very soon won the respect and trust of themusicians and singers in his charge; they did after all represent one of the best orchestrasand most capable opera ensembles in Europe.Every season, Bohm conducted nearly all the Staatskapelle concerts and about 70opera performances, setting new standards above all in the Mozart, Wagner and Straussrepertoire (including the world premieres of Die Schweigsame Frau and Daphne, the latter work being dedicated to him). In this extraordinarily extensive activity, he set his stamp on the ensemble, whose guest performances confirmed it's internationalranking. Even in his first year in Dresden, he made recordings in the Semperoper, which always had to be especially prepared for the purpose. The present is a special live recording of the Staatskapelle Dresden's 1st symphony concert of the season in the Semperoper on September 1, 2017. Christian Thielemann's engagement with the symphonic work of Anton Bruckner takes him in Vol. 52 to the composer's early years. The carefree mood of the First Symphony's last movement prompted the mature Bruckner to comment InchNever was I so bold and cheeky again.Inch The work was composed from January 1865 to April 14, 1866, in Linz, with the 2nd version adapted in Vienna from March 12, 1890 to April 18, 1891. It premiered on May 9, 1868, in the Redoutensaal in Linz, with the augmented opera orchestra conducted by the composer. The Vienna version was premiered in the Musikvereinssaal in Vienna on December 13, 1891, with Hans Richter conducting the Vienna Philharmonic.
