Q: How do start the dishwashe.
A: Select the cycle(s) you want and close the door. There'll be a red light shining on the floor. When the light goes off, it's done!
Q: Is the listed height of 33 7/8 inches adjustable downward? if so, by how much?
A: Not adjustable... need to make sure it fits by measuring first, but if you have standard counter cabinets you should be fine. We don't, and I had to modify the cabinets slightly (but we live in a nearly 250 year old house with handmade cabinets).
Q: Is the handle a bar that protrudes or is the handle recessed?
A: On the Bosch 500, the "handle" is recessed.

So far, so good
I've only used the new Bosch 500 dishwasher twice since it was installed, so I haven't tried all of the various options and settings yet. I am still figuring out the best way to load dishes and bowls but it does hold a lot, however, I would like more specific areas for glasses. I noticed in the first load that dried on food on silverware was not removed. I'll try a longer cycle next time. Overall, I am happy with the purchase.
