The Boswell Sisters inauspiciously launched their recording career in New Orleans, their hometown, on March 22, 1925. Early local appearances featured Connie, the eldest, on cello, Helvetia (Vet) on violin, and Martha at the piano, but the city's Jazz environment made Connie and Vet switch to saxophone and banjo, respectively. At first, the singing was almost incidental, but it became their ticket to national attention five years later when they moved to New York and became a fixture on radio shows. The Boswell Sisters were notable for their tight harmony as well as their unique ability to modulate pitch and give familiar songs a new melodic twist. They were the cutting edge that inspired future groups, including the Andrews Sisters, who began their own career by emulating them, even down to their Southern accent. The exuberant sisters recorded a string of hits in the 1930s, sometimes teaming up with fellow vocalists, such as Bing Crosby and the Mills Brothers. Instrumental accompaniments are by some of the days most popular musicians and bands, including the Dorsey Brothers, Don Redman, Red Nichols, and Benny Goodman. Considering their popularity and impact, the sisters had a relatively brief run, disbanding in 1936 when Martha and Vet married outside of the music industry and decided to give priority to family life. Connie, however, continued and enjoyed a successful solo career. This boxed set contains the entire Boswell Sisters output of commercially released recordings- a remarkable set of performances that paved the way for the vocal trio genre. It also includes a bonus DVD featuring more extraordinary performances.

The Boswell Sisters were arguably the best and most original, influential and innovative vocal group in the annals of popular music. With their upbringing rooted in New Orleans jazz and blues they developed their swinging close harmony sound during the '20s alongside the welter of musical innovations that were happening at the time, recording first for Victor and then for Brunswick and Decca through to 1936. Their appreciation of jazz rhythms and blues inflexions combined with their vocal gymnastics to create a unique sound and style, which resulted in huge record sales, regrettably during the pre-record sales chart era, when hit success could not be readily quantified. They were hugely influential, and The Andrews Sisters freely admit to having based their style on the Boswell Sisters techniques, effectively taking over their role when they retired in the mid-30s in favour of family lives. This great-value 49-track collection comprises a significant proportion of the A and B sides of the 78s they released during their active years, and includes the titles which were their biggest sellers and generally regarded as their most typical and important recordings. It comprises solely recordings by the three Boswell Sisters, and does not include any Connee Boswell solo recordings.

Al Bowlly was one of the first British artists who could seriously be called a pop idol - he was a crooner in the heyday of the dance band era of the '30s, whose effortless romantic vocals made him a true superstar of his era. In a career spanning less than 15 years before he was killed in a London air raid in 1941, he made almost 1000 recordings, and made the successful shift in the mid-'30s to conquer the US market as well. There is still an enormous amount of interest in Bowlly's work among nostalgia buffs of all ages, fuelled by TV documentaries. This terrific value 100-track 4-CD anthology brings not only some of his biggest hits but also some of his lesser-known material than has not been over-represented on previous collections, and will be an excellent medium for those discovering his work for the first time to achieve an entertaining overview of his matchless style and talent, and covering his recording career, from his first recordings in 1927 to one made a couple of weeks before his death in April 1941.
