When the Court Opera Director Wilhelm Jahn commissioned the by no means unvain Johann Strauss Jr. To write a 'genuine' opera, he readily accepted. So, he wrote Ritter Pásmán, a work the Waltz King himself regarded as his only one in this genre, although the plot is basically like an operetta. The source was the narrative Pázmán lovag by the Hungarian writer János Aranyi (1817-1882). It deals with jealousy and a kind of tit-for-tat. The premiere of the comic opera at the Vienna Court Opera on New Year's Day 1892 was a major society event, but it's artistic success lagged somewhat behind. The reviewers of the premiere were distanced towards the work. On the one hand, they unanimously elevated the ballet music at the beginning of Act III to the status of an absolute masterpiece. (By the way, this was the first time that a cimbalom could be heard in the orchestra of the Court Opera). The present live recording was captured at the Vienna Musikverein on 27 October 1975, with the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Heinz Wallberg, Eberhard Waechter as Ritter Pásmàn, Sona Ghazarian as Queen, Josef Hopfwieser as Hungarian King, and Truedeliese Schmidt as Eva as main cast. The recording includes the complete ballet music as bonus tracks, performed by the Slovac State Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Alfred Walter.

Anton Bruckner wrote his Symphony No. 6 over a period of two years, completing it in September 1881. And for once with this composer, the word 'completing' can be used without qualification known for his habit of reworking and revising his works, Bruckner for once seems to have been satisfied with the result of his efforts. That doesn't mean that the Sixth has enjoyed a smoother passage to the concert stage than other Bruckner symphonies, however. The only performance in Bruckner's lifetime was a partial one, of the two middle movements, and when Gustav Mahler conducted the first 'full' performance in 1899, he made a number of substantial cuts and other amendments. In fact, the true premiere of the Sixth as Bruckner wrote it had to wait until 1935, almost 40 years after the composer's death. And the work is still something of a Cinderella in the Bruckner catalogue, with far fewer outings in concert halls or on disc than for instance the Fourth or the Seventh. Bruckner called the Sixth his 'boldest' symphony - with a duration of 'only' some 55 minutes it is at any rate one of the shorter, but possibly the composer was thinking of the remarkably expansive Adagio or the ambiguous Scherzo, or of the way the so-called 'Bruckner rhythm' (different combinations of a duplet and a triplet) pervades the work. The present is the first in a Bruckner 'mini-series' from Thomas Dausgaard and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, appearing together on disc for the first time.

Following a visit to Wagner in Bayreuth in 1873, Anton Bruckner dedicated his most recent symphony, No.?3 in D minor, to 'the unattainable world-famous noble master of poetry and music' and would later refer to the work as his 'Wagner Symphony'. Among Bruckner's symphonies, it is the one with the most complicated genesis the first version was followed by substantial revisions and it exists in two more versions, from 1877/78 and 1888/89. The first version was never performed in Bruckner's lifetime - in fact, more than a century passed before the work was heard in the form that Wagner first knew and called 'a masterpiece'. This is the version that Thomas Dausgaard has chosen to perform, as he and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra follow up on their recording of the composer's Sixth Symphony, praised in Fanfare for having 'all of Bruckner's splendor and tenderness without any excess baggage'. Dausgaard explains the reason for his choice as follows 'The original version stands as a monolith... what you go through is musically so strong, swinging between timelessness and drive, despair and ecstasy, divine light and hellish fire, that in the end I feel you have to let yourself go and be won over by it.'
