About this product
Nine years before achieving an enduring worldwide success with the operetta A Waltz Dream, Oscar Straus scored a notable success in March 1898 in Mainz-where he was then earning his living as a conductor-with his symphonic poem based on Franz Grillparzer's play Der Traum, ein Leben. As the local press rightly observed at the time, the Inchvery appealing composition, distinguished by it's melodic flow and subtle harmonization... earned the composer, who was present, warm ovations and repeated curtain calls.Inch Today, the work has, quite incomprehensibly, been omitted even from the most exhaustive encyclopedias. Only slightly better was the fate of The Princess of Tragant, a ballet-pantomime that in November 1912 even opened the doors of the Vienna Court Opera to Straus. Although the title has not entirely vanished, the charming tale of a decidedly choosy princess and her suitors-so warmly received by audiences at the time-was soon cast into the impenetrable shadow of A Waltz Dream.

Paul Lincke Overtures Vol. 2. And shortly after Vol. 1, Vol. 2 is already released with further melody-saturated overtures by Paul Lincke, which are thus as good as complete on cpo. InchWhat Strauss once was for Vienna - Lincke is for Berlin!Inch. These verses by comedian Franz Heigl on Paul Lincke's 75th birthday celebrate the composer not only as the epitome of Berlin light music, but also as the founder of the associated operetta. Just as Strauss's Die Fledermaus was to Viennese operetta, his Frau Luna (soon to be released on cpo) is still considered a prime example of the Berlin variety of this genre, even though it did not take it's present form until 30 years after it's premiere. In addition to the overture to Frau Luna, there are other entertaining pieces worth hearing - also from one-act operas - such as the overture to the operetta Das blaue Bild from his successful series at the Apollo Theater in 1906, a InchFantasy in One Act.Inch It's very Parisian overture is characterized by a furious presto beginning, striking cornet and clarinet solos, and it's sometimes lyrically rapturous, sometimes exuberantly lively dance-like gesture. True authentic Paul Lincke discoveries!

Paul Buttner was a man of many talents. Trained as a composer under Felix Draeseke, he was one of the last Romantic symphonists after the turn of the century. He conducted workers' choirs, taught choral singing at the Dresden Conservatory (later becoming director), and worked as a critic for the Dresdner Volkszeitung. He inspired amateur musicians so passionately that he can rightly be described as a Inchmusical educator of the peopleInch. This intellectual vigor is directly reflected in Buttner's compositions, which, while modeled on great predecessors, challenge the boundaries of tradition in every measure - and convincingly so. His symphonic works, in particular, earned him wide recognition until the rise of the Nazi regime brought turbulence. His rediscovery is long overdue.
