About this product

The Austrian composer Walter Bricht (1904-70) was one of many musicians of Jewish ancestry who fled Vienna after the Anschluss for the safety of the USA; Bricht became a valued professor at Indiana University in Bloomington. Fittingly, it is the nearby Fort Wayne Philharmonic, in it's own debut recording, that has made the first album of Bricht's music. The recording reveals another major Viennese voice and points to yet another potentially important career cut off in the bud by the Nazis. Bricht was reportedly Franz Schmidt's favorite student, and the late-Romantic styles of the two men are indeed very closely aligned in their mix of Baroque counterpoint, Classical form and Wagnerian chromatic harmony Bricht's Symphony in A minor might almost be Schmidt's No. 5.

Kate Lindsey - Schumann & Faure: Samsara - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

For her fourth recital on Alpha Classics, mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey has chosen to record two cycles, Schumann's well-known Frauenliebe und Leben and Faure's La Chanson d'eve, a much more unfamiliar work. What the two cycles have in common is that a woman is their protagonist Inchboth works deal with innocence, discovery, joy, sorrow and ultimately a deeper understanding of life that only experience can offerInch, says Kate Lindsey, who has named this new album Samsara, a Sanskrit word that evokes the cycle of life, from birth to death. Eric Le Sage, a great specialist in the music of Faure and Schumann, is the ideal partner for this introspective journey, which also features extracts from Schumann's sublime Myrthen as well as Faure's famed Clair de lune and Chanson d'amour.

The London Ambrosian Singers - Tudor Church Music: Easter Liturgy Church England - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

To be exact, we should include in the Tudor Church music only the period prior to 1549 and consider Robert Fayrfax (1464-1521) and Hugh Aston (died 1522) as the first Tudor composers. They were succeeded by a great master - John Taverner; only a small number of works with English texts in his hand are extant. Then came Thomas Tallis, who composed works for the reformed Church, but he left also compositions intended for the Catholic service. Peter Philips, another major figure, could not bring himself to accept the Reform and left England. William Byrd enjoyed such popularity that he was able to write music for the Catholic Church under the aegies of the liberal Elizabeth I without ever being bothered. With Orlando Gibbons the composers began to write more for the Church of England. Thomas Tomkins may be considered as the last of those com posers coming under the heading InchTudor Church MusicInch.
