Q: Does ordering the DR221CL drum unit mean I get a package that contains all four drum units (black, cyan, magenta, and yellow or do I just get the black unit? If just the black unit, how do I order the other three?

A: Yes you get all four drum units.

Q: what exactly is this used for and where do I install It? On my machine Brother MFC-9130CW it has been coming on the screen to replace the drum. Is this what I need to replace. Thank you.

A: The drum is what holds the toner cartridge in the printer. It's the black thing that the cartridge sets in. You will need to pull each one out, then remove the toner cartridge and install it into a new drum. Each color needs one. After doing so you will need to reset the drum life counter on the machine. A: The Brother DR221CL is the drum unit set which transfers the toner to the paper. The toner cartridges are sold separately.

A: The Brother MFC-8810DW printer uses the DR-720 drum unit.

    Item description should say black, cyan, yellow and magenta, not just black. There are 4 drum units in the box.

    Brother DR221 Drum Units

    The Brother original equipment Drum Units work as they should-like new units. They're easy to remove and install. The only problem was ordering them online due to some confusion as to whether or not you are ordering one drum unit or the whole set. You are buying all four drum units, not one black unit as the product display shows.

    Did what it was supposed to

    So the downside to the Brother 3170 printer is that everything but the shell is a consumable that needs replacing. I'd say look around. Best Buy came in with a next to lowest price in my online search for replacement drums. What sealed the deal is that I know Best Buy. The other lower priced vendor? Not so much. The drums, btw, is a kit (heh, drum kit!) that consists of all 4 replacement drums. It's a pain to have to swap out drums as well as separate toner carts. But all for for 100 something bucks is less painful than what I was thinking (140/drum).
