Born in St. Louis, Missouri, vibraphonist, and multi-instrumentalist Cal Tjader is known as the most successful non-Latino Latin musician. Although he engaged in a wide variety of jazz idioms, the music of Cuba, the Caribbean, and Latin America, were his primary focus and inspiration. In April 1954, he formed The Cal Tjader Modern Mambo Sextet and recorded several albums in rapid succession for Fantasy Records. Demasiado Caliente (1960), presented here is one of the sextet's most highly rated.

The list of those who borrowed verses from Dumas's pen is a mixture of obscure and illustrious names' Hector Berlioz, Joseph Doche, Gilbert Duprez, Cesar Franck, Franz Liszt, Henri Reber, Francis Thome, Alphonse Varney among them. This programme, conceived in collaboration with the Association Jeunes Talents, presents an anthology of those settings, coupled with melodies by Jules Massenet, Henri Duparc and Benjamin Godard.

Blending Latin American music with jazz, he created his own original and adventurous sound. In 1957, Contreras formed his first quartet, which reflected an almost bewildering range of influences. Some key albums from this period include Jazz Tropical (presented here) and Jazz a Paris (both from 1962), Jazz Ballet (1963), and Misa en Jazz (1966). All throughout his extended career, Contreras remained a champion of the jazz form in Mexico, winning the National Festival of Jazz award each year between 1959 and 1966.
