Calvin Johnson - Wonderful Beast - VINYL LP

Rock'n'roll is dead. Gallows Wine [KLP287] is a wake for it's charred remains. Calvin Johnson traveled to Columbus, Mississippi to record Gallows Wine with the combo Hartle Road at their Pompeii studio. Columbus, in Lowndes County, is the childhood home of Tennessee Williams (just down US Route 45 from White Station, birthplace of Howlin' Wolf). Songs reflecting this singular environment include InchPink CadillacInch written by Calvin when he was 16 (in reserve for just the right session);Title song InchGallows WineInch rips psycho psychedelic, poetic license intact;InchCrazy LegsInch is a Gene Vincent class act celebrating our sock hopulation;InchOrange AidInch melts downtown no WAV.Yeah, Gallows Wine gets primitive Lurch pulls a night shift on organ, Grandma Moses on the fife and drum. Calvin busk (melodica garage worm profane). Rockabilly spin cycle, guitar scrape and crush. Hand jive. You wanted Calvin Johnson howling beyond the magnolia curtain, you got it Gallows Wine. The only proper response - - - Rock'n'roll is dead. Long live rock'n'roll. Album Tracks 1. Hat Trick 2. The first of what promises to be many posthumous solo albums from Calvin Johnson, culled from the extensive archive of tapes left behind by the prolific songmaker and performer. Calvin Johnson made up songs about the feeling inside for over twenty years. What Was Me collects ten bits of lifeness and spreads them thickly with voice and acoustic guitar; a capella 40% of the time. There are patches that are worn and threadbare but the overall effect is gutty and moist. The affect is also noteworthy. Calvin is joined by the K divas Mirah on InchOde to St. ValentineInch and Beth Ditto (the Gossip) on InchLightnin' Rod for JesusInch. Album Tracks 1. Past Comes Back to Haunt Me 2. Can We Kiss? 3. Love Will Come Back Again 4. Ode to St. Valentine - Calvin Johnson 5. Palriga 6. Nothing to Hold Us Here 7. Warm Days 8. Lies Goodbye 9. Lightnin' Rod for Jesus - Calvin Johnson, Calvin Johnson 10.
