For "L" series glass I was expecting to be overwhelmed. I am not. The colors don't meet my expectations - even in full sunlight - and because of the flat contrast, its very slow to focus, even with the correct distance setting on the lens. Its a very expensive zoom for not impressing me.

I had purchased this lens earlier in the year for a road trip out west. To be honest, I'm usually a Nikon user but I had wanted to try a Canon and purchased the camera then this lens. The Lens is very fast in focusing and the pics are very sharp, crystal clear and the colors were simply amazing. I am very happy with this lens purchase and very happy I gave it a try. (keep in mind the pic used was reduced in size so quality may be effected, only used as example)

Awesome lens for the price. One of my favorites! Doesnt have image stabilizer but I only use it for still photography so don’t really need it unless taking video but highly recommended begginer lens

I originally bought this Lens for sports photography and was planning to mainly use this for Motocross and Supercross. I was a little worried about the f4, being you would have to have good lighting for the pictures to turn out right, but after I got this lens I was amazed how great the pictures came out..even in low light! As far as not having IS, you don't need it with sports and most of the photography you plan to shoot. I also took portrait photos, and they turned out amazing as well!! In other words, the Canon L series lens compared to the regular Canon lens just pops! The colors and everything look more realistic and vibrant. The body I use is a Canon t3i and this is a pefect matching lens for the zoom range 70-200. I must admit, I probably will NEVER buy another lens unless it's an L lens!

THIS IS A GREAT LENS! I traded the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM for this lens. This lens is a little shorter, but the image quality is so much better in most cases that you can crop the image more. The 70-200 is quieter, the barrel does not extend when you zoom, it has a uniform maximum aperture across all focal lengths, and the build quality is better. This lens also has full time manual, faster and more reliable auto-focusing, and a focusing scale and comes with a lens hood. This was my first L lens and I am very happy with it.

This is a very nice lens if you want an entry into Canon "L" (Luxury) series. You get the great "L" glass and build for less price. This is great for long shots and it keeps it's nice clarity all through it's range. It has *outstanding* bokeh that leaves you with some beautiful shots, especially portraits and floral shots...can't say enough about the bokeh. Has a nice build quality and single barrel means the movement is inside and less places for dust to enter. Comes with the lens hood and soft case to keep it in when not mounted. The color and contrast is wonderful. The downsides that I found...the lens cap is VERY difficult, if not impossible to remove without first removing the hood. While it does come with the hood and soft case, it does not come with the tripod mounting collar which isn't very cheap when you have to buy it. It's light color stands out like a sore thumb and I would be careful if out wandering around the back allies at night to get some night shots. All in All...for the price this is a real bargain for a Canon "Luxury" lens! I love the great bokeh, just the right amount of color saturation and excellent contrast. It will be great for a lot of photography but it still won't be on my camera nearly as often as my shorter, lighter, wider "walk around" lens (Canon 28-135 IS lens). For the price and the glass...well worth the price.

I bought this primarily as a portrait lens and to upgrade from my kit lens. This lens is amazing in sharpness, color and contrast . After using this lens it's difficult to go back to anything less than "L" glass. Keep in mind this lens does NOT have Image stabilization. To avoid camera shake at long focal lengths use a shutter speed of 1/250 or higher.

This is a great upgrade lens. It takes far better pictures than a kit lens. Focus is sharp, good quality.

I read a number of reviews here before deciding to purchase this lens. Everything others have said about it are true. Its construction and image quality are top notch. I like that it doesn't extend and the front element doesn't rotate. On the downside, it's also true what others said about needing A LOT of light. I took it to the beach to photograph my son SUPing and I noticed that as the sun went down, so did the quality of my pics. A final word - shooting without IS is much more difficult than I imagined. Make sure your hands are stead enough for the task and/or that you can use a tri/mono-pod in your shooting situation.

Good zoom with a solid aperture which won't break the bank. Originally had the 55-250 which didn't quite get the job done. This is a nice step in the right direction and with a high enough shutter speed you won't notice the IS is missing. Plus it's a far cheaper alternative to the 70-200 f2.8

Don't hesitate like I did; just get it and start shooting. The Canon L series lenses are that much better and it's not just marketing hype.

This lens is very sharp and has quick autofocus. Be warned that it does not have Image Stabilization. If you are shooting outdoors, you won't have an issue with this lens.

I absolutely love this telephoto lens. There is not need for the 2000 version of it. This one does the job and it does it great. The quality is amazing and has a similar bokeh effect when using the f/4 setting. Great price for a great lens.

It’s a great lens on many levels. The quality is what you would expect from an L series lens. The photos I have taken with it in the few months I’ve owned it sometimes border on remarkable. It’s not all that heavy or bulky and the zoom and focus rings move smoothly and silently. The lens is held back only by its lack of an Image Stabilizer. If you want to shoot freehand without a tripod or monopod, it can get a little iffy. I compensate for this by simply firing off triple what I normally would while trying to stay motionless. I’ll usually get several good keepers in this way. All in all, I love it. No regrets considering the price so I fully recommend it. It’s a great, high quality lens that can’t be beat at its price.

Bought this lens as I was beginning my sports photography business. I was hired to shoot a marathon in AZ and it worked wonderfully! I later used it to shoot sessions for professional athletes in AZ and, again, it performed perfectly. Would the f/2.8 have been a bit sharper? Yes, no doubt. Did this f/4L get the job done? 100%

Professional grade build and superb image/optical qualities. Lightweight and great for multiple uses including portraits, short distance nature shots and outdoor daylight sporting events. Only drawback is no image stabilization and due to F4 aperture, recommend a flash for indoor photography.

I use this lens mainly for landscapes so the IS and f2.8 aperture of the higher end models were unnecessary. The lens is tack sharp and MUCH lighter than its 2.8 IS cousin. If you’re going for low-light or handheld or portraits then you may need to go for the IS 2.8, but if those aren’t things you’re too worried about then this lens is a steal.

This lens is very lightweight, and easy to carry with my camera. If you are looking for a lens to capture the moon, this is not the one, but it works very well for fast action and landscaping shots. It's a great lens for the money conscious photographer.
