Coming from a 1DX mk ii, I mulled over getting the R5 or the R3. I decided on the R5 because of the higher megapixels, which will allow me to crop in on my sports photos. I capture horse racing mostly, or other things in quick action. I am impressed with 99.8% of this camera's abilities, and its price point. The megapixel bump, compared to the low 1DX mkii is amazing. The weight difference is great too, even with the 100-400mm EF ii, I'd much rather carry the R5 with this lens. The 1DX mkii is a back-breaker with anything over a 24-70 on it, especially for shooting 12 hours straight. Eventually, I'll get RF lenses, but while I have a 1DX as well, I'll keep using EF. I don't find that the noise is hateful (when compared to the 1DX mkii), and let's be honest, if you use programs that reduce noise and can still keep the quality of the picture, it's just one extra step. Especially now that Adobe Photoshop has Denoise in-program. Highly recommended if you’re a Canon lover like me.

Hey guys I’ve been using the camera for 1 month and boy, This camera is awesome.. Is the perfect hybrid camera ever made.. When it comes to taking pictures, We have got to the point where we don't have to worry about iso performance and resolution. This camera if you wanted to, can outperform medium format cameras.. Yes, I said it. Now when it comes to video, what can I say? it offers just about what their line up cinema cameras can deliver. Thats not to say it should replace them but you can produce cinema video that can part with.. The fact you can now film in 8K raw and with the new firmware 1.3.0 that can ease your post production, I don't see how much more you ask for. If you ask me is worth the price, welllllllllll...... Yeah, is worth it!!!!!

This camera is a total game changer. I upgraded from a 6D and I cannot be more thrilled. I am primarily an equestrian photographer and also do maybe 6 weddings/elopements per year. The eye tracking for animals and humans makes my keep rate 95%. It's so nice not having to overshoot to still have some photos miss the focus slightly. It keeps up with fast paced horses who are constantly moving. I shot at a horse show in a partially covered arena (horrible, horrible, light) and it was able to track the focus even with my subject 150ft away, and still be sharp. I do not have any RF lenses yet and use the adapter with my Canon EF lenses and Sigma ART 135mm. The only downfall (and I mean only downfall) is the battery life. I will be investing in a few more batteries and battery grip soon, just for weddings.

An amazing upgrade from my Canon 90D!! Absolutely top quality typical Canon. My photos are noticeably sharper shooting with the RF 24-105 lens. Honestly the menu options for those of you familiar with Canon’s DSLR menu is roughly the same but way way more intense. There are so many setting and sub settings in this thing that I’ll be honest for the first couple hours setting it up and using it I felt like I had never touched a camera before. With all the added features that my 90D doesn’t have left me wondering if I was even setting up the AF, Settings, menus correctly. First few photos ended up soft, flat, and some even out of focus. Strangely this was using the exact same basic ISO, Shutter speed, and aperture as my 90D that took rock solid, tack sharp images. Thing with the R5 is the settings while perfect for the 90D are not perfect for the R5. Most importantly where ISO is concerned. I have found that for instance 1/500 at F4 (the RF lens I used lowest aperture) at ISO 800 indoors for photos of my kiddo running around ended up dark and completely underexposed. I allowed the camera to choose Setting the ISO to auto meant it was setting it to 25600. This was showing perfect exposure. Now on my 90D 25600 equals ungodly noise in the photos. On the R5 it equaled slight noise akin to ISO 1600 on the 90D. So I have found that strangely the camera tends to want to shoot at much higher ISO values than the 90D. I’m not sure if this is purely environmental (lighting, ambience, etc) or if the ISO levels are somehow programmed to need to run high to expose the same as a non mirrorless DSLR would. I tried this same thought out by using my Tamron 35mm 1.4F prime EF lens on the R5 with the EF/RF adapter. I took a couple shots with the R5/Tamron and 90D/Tamron. Same lighting conditions, same Manual settings. The 90D consistently allowed a much lower ISO setting than the R5 before being severely under exposed. So I found that strange and interesting. Outside in cloudy/overcast conditions the R5 shoots sharp, perfectly focused, and clean with any EF or RF lens I have tried. Even at 1/30, F8, ISO 100. The photos are sharp without any blur from hand holding at that shutter speed. On the 90D with same settings the photos suffer from hand shake blur at that Shutter speed. But just changing the shutter to a hand operated friendly speed on the 90D churned out under exposed images unless I dropped the F down to F4 or lower and upped the shutter speed to 1/250 or higher leaving the ISO below 800. So in short I have no idea what the R5 is programmed to do differently that would cause the ISO to need to be higher than a non mirrorless camera but regardless it’s one of those things you just have to learn the quirks of and adjust your pre programmed brain to adapt to. Those of you that know exactly what settings to choose based on environment will possibly be a little challenged at first. Once you adopt the R5 like learning photography for the first time and ignoring what you may know would be the perfect setup on a mirror DLSR you will adapt to it quickly. Overall this is an amazing camera very much worthy of the price tag attached to it. I wouldn’t go back to a mirror DSLR now that I have seen what this near flagship mirrorless camera can do. But it does make me miss the “simplicity” of the 90D as far as speed of use on the fly changing settings to suit a changing/unexpected lighting condition. If you have an R6 and are considering upgrading I don’t think the gains are worth the price tag. But if you have a 90D or similar crop sensor or 5D full frame I definitely think this is a very worthy upgrade. But then again some of the best photos I have ever taken have been on the likes of the 80D and 90D bodies. It isn’t always the camera that makes the photos pop and leaves the viewer in awe. I guarantee that the older bodies are capable of absolutely flawless and perfect photos. In the hands of someone who knows how to shoot in manual and choose every setting you would do just as well with an older camera. The difference here is most noticeable in wildlife photography and action shots. None of my landscape photography is so far advanced compared to a high end DSLR. If you only shoot urban, architecture, street, landscapes and don’t use the AF face or eye detection you could be happy with any high end Canon from the last 8 years. But if you shoot birds, sports, wildlife the R5 is by far the superior camera. Would I buy it again? Absolutely. Will I sell or stick the 90D on a shelf to collect dust? No. I’ll still use it for certain purposes. Because truly it’s better at some things the R5 simply isn’t made for. If you are on the fence about upgrading from DSLR or from a lower mirrorless body take the leap and buy the R5. Just don’t expect to still be the pro you think you are in the first 100 photos.

The camera is wonderful, hence giving an overall rating of 5 stars but Best Buy has some serious problems. I don't think that you'll find a single person who says anything different about the camera. I am a professional photographer and I use my camera a lot. I upgraded to this camera from the Canon R5 because the R5 was overheating and wouldn't let me record 8k for very long. Not a problem with this camera. However, when I received the box with the camera in it, the camera was packaged terribly inside the outer box. That outer box was too big and the camera just moved throughout the box during shipment. The "security" tape wasn't even covering the entire length of the box. When I opened the outer box, the inner box containing the camera was dented. And when I opened that box up, the material inside was all shuffled around and the English version of the instruction manual was missing. I have included a couple of pictures of what I am talking about. So while I highly recommend this camera to anyone wanting a high class professional photo and video recording tool, I do not recommend buying it from Best Buy. It should be noted here that this was NOT the only time when a package from Best Buy was shipped to me in terrible condition. Therefore, I do not believe that this is a one time only occasion. Going forward, I will not have anything shipped to me from Best Buy. One would think that a camera with this price tag would be shipped a little better than how it was. The camera itself is not physically damaged BUT it is almost impossible to know at this point if there was any damage done to this camera internally. That may only be determined over the course of time. I am seriously considering bringing this camera back to Best Buy and getting a new one. But if I do that, I run into the same problem with a new order. However, the camera is available at a Best Buy store but that store is over 2 hours away (each way)! Not sure what I am going to do. I am one of the Best Buy Total Tech customers - something I have paid for last year and this year. One of the "perks" of that membership is the support (or lack of) that Best Buy gives you. In the past I have called Best Buy customer support for help but what they say every time is that they don't have any power to do anything and everything is up to the individual store to rectify whatever problem comes up. In other words, it's absolutely pointless contacting them. I have had situations when the customer support person says one thing and I go to the store to follow through with the "solution" given to me by the support person and the store refuses to honor it. I guess I will have to go back to the store but I'm not sure if they will be able to provide much of a solution for me unless I want to drive 2 hours (each way) to pick up another camera. NOT HAPPY!! Not sure if Best Buy even reads these comments. But if they do, can someone reach out to me? Thanks! Chris

Background: - I have owned the Canon R5 for 2 years and a month - I have photographed over 75 weddings with this camera - My current shutter count is 150,000+ - My purchasing route has been Mark IV —> EOS R —> R5 Who is this camera for: - A professional looking to upgrade from a DSLR to a high-quality mirrorless camera - An event / portrait / real estate photographer Who is this camera not for: - Professional sports/wildlife photographer… Canon has better options for you. - Someone with no prior photography experience… If you have the budget, go for it, but just know that the learning curve will be steep. Advice: - The RF lenses that go with this body are spectacular. Save up and buy them. Pros: - The autofocus is stellar when paired with an RF lens. Images look tack sharp even at 1.2 - The camera will last 8+ hours in Eco mode during a wedding with a battery grip - Silent shutter is the best-kept secret. During the wedding ceremony, I am able to turn my shutter off if the wedding is outdoors. I photograph in silence to not disrupt the gusts enjoying the ceremony… it’s the little things like this that add up. Cons: - I will get an error code that pops up and stops the camera from taking pictures. The only way to fix this is to remove the battery and put it back in. This doesn’t happen often, but it does happen. … I sat here for 5 minutes trying to come up with more negatives… I’m sure that I could nitpick it. Truth is though that this is the best camera body I have ever owned. It’s built like a tank. Yes, it cost an arm and a leg, but the proof of its value is in the images it can help me produce. Recommend? - 1000% YES

I purchased this camera after the Mark II came out. I even had a chance to use the Mark II for a week before deciding to buy this one. Here’s what I found. For a stills shooter, this camera is lacking for nothing over the Mark II except for pre-capture and eye control auto focus. I found eye control auto focus (even on the R1) to be a bit hit and miss. I just don’t think it’s worth the premium. The Mark II might also have some marginal gains in autofocus subject tracking, but again, not worth the premium for me. For video, which I don’t do a lot of, the Mark II probably has more advantages including better cooling. That said, some folks have made some brilliant videos with this R5 so don’t shy away from using it for video! I just got back from a trip to Maui where I used it extensively to photograph birds and sunsets, flora, and fauna of all sorts! It performed beautifully. The autofocus never let me down, and the colors it renders are just lovely! I’m also impressed with the dynamic range. The amount of detail I can pull out of the shadows is impressive and it handles highlights pretty darn well too! I’m always careful to expose for highlights but sometimes scenes near the ocean are overwhelmed by dark or mid tones with bright white wave crests. Even those were mostly recoverable. If you’re in the market for a camera, and you can live without the marginal improvements offered by the mark ii I highly recommend this camera. You can produce huge, print worthy photos every day of the week with this camera.

I absolutely love this camera, I’ve been using it non stop since I got it, today is 8-2-20 and the camera works even better than ever. After the 1.1.0 firmware update I have never had a overheating problem. I don’t use the camera for video all the time, it’s like 70-30 I photograph more. The eye af is out of this world it locks on harder than a heat seeking missile. The bed is crisp and vibrant. Overall this is the best camera I have own in every aspect... coming from a 6D MKii.

It is so good for what it does. 8k is a bit overkill. Have not used it once. Just got this for the 40mp over the cheaper one. Would of preferred to have gotten the cheaper model since i heard it performs almost similar. Would be better if it costs 3k instead of 4k.

The Canon R5 Mark I may not be the newest body on the shelf, but after buying it last November, it has become the most reliable and capable “old new” camera I own. Its age doesn’t show in the results — only in the price tag, and that’s a good thing. Here's a picture to prove it!

Light weight, high resolution, eye tracking. What more should I say. As a stills photographer, this is the camera I’ve been waiting for. I previously had a 5d Mk III

I have this camera for 1.5 years now (upgrade from EOS 6D Mark II (& a switch from DSLR). I use it mostly for natural light photography (haven't tried video yet) and mainly do manual shooting. Sharp and high resolution images, less noise. Very sturdy camera.

I bought the Canon R5 Mirrorless camera as an upgrade for my Canon 5D Mark IV. I like the quietness of the camera when taking photos. I love having all of the settings displayed on the touchscreen! It allows me to quickly make adjustments to settings as needed. I also like that when making changes to the settings I can see how it affects the image through the viewer or the touchscreen making it easier to achieve the correct exposure for whatever I’m shooting instead of guessing how it will turn out. I’m very impressed with the quality and sharpness of my photos compared to the 5D! If you’re on the fence about buying the R5 I would highly recommend getting it! My only regret is waiting so long to get mine!

This camera is a beast! As an upgrade from my old Canon 70d, this camera blows it away in everything it does and can do. I have primarily been using it as a video camera, shooting clips for church services, but have shot some photos as well and am impressed on so many levels. Design/Sturdiness This camera feels like a Canon. It feels sturdy, it fits in my hands well just like other Canon models. The body is slightly less deep than other mirrored cameras, but this is not really noticeable when lenses are attached. One thing to note is that when the R5 is off and you move the body around and lightly shake it there is a slight movement of the sensor. This is part of the IBIS (In Body Image Stabilization) system and is normal. When the camera is on, this is not an issue. This was a little surprising to me though after purchasing a $3000+ camera! Compatibility I shoot the R5 with the following equipment: Canon RF 35mm f1.8 Macro STM Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8 L II USM with EF-EOS R mount adapter Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II with EF-EOS R mount adapter Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8 IS II USM with EF-EOS R mount adapter The minor inconvenience of having to use a mount adapter for the EF lenses is overshadowed by the fact that the camera treats both the RF and EF lenses the same regarding AF speed, clarity and compatibility. I have had no issues at all even in low light with the 70-200mm finding faces and eyes for quick AF. Honestly, the eye detection AF is one of the most amazing things about this camera. And YES, the animal eye AF works well too and there is a noticeable difference in capturing pets or animal's eyes. Battery/Other Features The new LP-E6NH is a great battery for this camera. I can go a full day of recording 1080p video clips without having to recharge (adds up to a 2+ hours of clips). This battery also has the ability to be charged through the USB-C cable that is provided. That same USB-C cable can also transfer photos and videos from the camera to your computer (note that the cable will not power the camera and transfer images/videos at the same time). Using the USB-C as a data transfer comes in handy if you don't have a dedicated CF-Express card reader. The R5 uses a micro HDMI clean output which is nice for a field monitor, but the micro part is a little frustrating. I am always worried I'm going to break the cord or port since it is so small. Yes, I recommend this camera, yes it is expensive, but is the best you can get at this time. The EVF is great, but I have grown accustom to using just the screen as well. Both work great and are surprisingly accurate. Shooting 4k video is awesome - no, I have not had any issues with overheating. Shooting 8k videos is ridiculous and unnecessary but fun to tell your friends that you can. Yes, the Canon R5 is worth the investment.

In the last 3 years I’ve been through the 80D, 6DII, R and the 90D. I bought the R because I wanted one camera that did everything well. I deliberated a between the R5 and R6 and settled on the R5. It is by far the best Canon I have owned and does everything well. Just a side note, I use it for photograph and not as a video camera. The noise at high ISO is exceptional, The dynamic range is amazing. The built in features are expansive and the flexibility of customization is the best I’ve experienced. I do landscape, wildlife and sports and I really think there isn’t anything the R5 wouldn’t do well. It’s build is hardy and I wouldn’t hesitate recommending it.

The body is lightweight and auto focus works great while using for wild life. It’s pricy but it’s worth it. Has a great grip too. Shutter speed is great. Plan on using it frequently!

Fantastic camera. Great Dynamic range. Viewfinder is wide and informative. Autofocus is incredible. Raw file is great. You can extract all information from darks and lights very easy. Low noise with high iso. Stabilization is incredible. You can use 1 second of shutter speed and longer for shooting without tripod! I’m absolutely satisfied with the camera. It is better to take the ring adapter for EF lenses. I use it for iso.

I shot Nikon for the last 12 years, my last camera being the D810. I started shooting my kids sports teams. The D810 held up okay but as the kids got older and faster I knew it was time to upgrade. The R5 has been amazing. The autofocus, using the RF 70-200 2.8, is instant. I'm getting shots I would of never had before on my old system. I went with the R5 over the R6 because I use my camera for all types of photography, the R5 just does everything good. I've really enjoyed the EVF when it comes to reviewing photos. There is a little lag but it doesn't prevent me from keeping up with fast moving subjects, just some getting use to.
