About this product
Tenor Salvatore Champagne became fascinated by the work of Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco through his longtime pianist and collaborator, Howard Lubin. The introduction led to 15 years of research by Champagne, during which he uncovered the influential composer's unpublished Shakespeare Sonnets as well as a song cycle setting Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass. In them Champagne found music of profound beauty and intimacy-and he became intent on sharing these treasures through his singing and in his work with students. The discoveries led to this premiere recording and the 66-page book that accompanies it a fascinating exploration of Castelnuovo-Tedesco's life, work, and influence among a generation of U.S. composers and musicians. In addition, the book features rarely seen personal photographs and other artifacts that capture the essence of Castelnuovo-Tedesco.

Recorded between January and October 1960 and released by Argo Records (part of Chess Records) in 1961, at Last was Etta James debut studio album. She had already made a name for herself thanks to a succession of hit singles on the R&B chart, and four of these were to be found on her debut long player. Yet as impressive as the hits undoubtedly were, what made at Last stand head and shoulders above contemporary albums was the sheer variety of material, covering most musical bases such as blues and jazz with consummate ease. There is not a faulty performance to be found on any of the tracks, just as you might expect from an already seasoned performer such as Etta James. At Last has retained it's appeal, being regularly nominated and included into listings of the Top 500 albums of all time.

Ten years after writing 'Les Corps glorieux' Olivier Messiaen developed a plan to compose a Book of Rhythmic Studies for the organ. This resulted in two distinct works of which 'Livre d'orgue' proved to be an anthology representative of his compositional thinking at the time. It runs the gamut of rhythms, tone colors and sonorities, ranging from extreme delicacy to the most powerful vehemence, and includes new modes, complex Hindu rhythms, and an aviary of birdsong. The test piece 'Verset pour la fete de la Dedicace' offers a more serene vision in it's own essay in birdsong. Tom Winpenny is Assistant Master of the Music at St. Alban's Cathedral, where he accompanies the daily choral services and directs the Abbey Girls' Choir. Previously, he served as sub-organist at St. Paul's Cathedral, London. He is also musical director of the London Pro Arte Choir. Winpenny has broadcast frequently on BBC Radio and featured on American Public Media's pipedreams. He was organ scholar at King's College, Cambridge, graduating with a music degree, and twice accompanying the festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, broadcast worldwide.
