Celia Redgate - English Flute - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The debut long player from 22 year Kizzy Crawford has already a great deal and garnered gushing praise from all those who have discovered her truly unique music. TheWelsh/Bajan multi-instrumentalist, singer, actress and songwriter draws upon soul, folk, jazz, and pop and infuses her music with the best elements of all, the results set her apart from any of her contemporariesAlbum opener 'Dive' illustrates this adeptly, the slinky neo-soul groove is furnished with touches of retro synth, whilst beautifully crafted backing vocals provide a rich backdrop to her beautifully crafted melody line. Of the other 10 tracks that make up The Way I Dream, the stand out moments are many, including Golden Brown, the folky soul-jazz masterpiece which is an account of confronting, and dealing with prejudice; 'Golden Brown is my grown up self talking to that little girl who felt so confused and alone telling her to be proud of her differences; her brown skin, her big curly hair, her voice, her whole self and to not listen to the words of bullies and ignorant people'.

C.F. Abel - Flute Sonatas [COMPACT DISCS] date 10/25/1994

These four central-European composers share a history of persecution and emigration but survived the worst excesses of the time. Their works for flute and piano reflect very different aesthetic positions. Schoenberg's uncompromising Sonata for Flute and Piano is an arrangement of his Wind Quintet, Op. 26 of 1923-24 made a few years later by the Austrian composer Felix Greissle. The Suite by Ernst Krenek is delightfully neo-Classical, whilst the Czech Emil Burian crafted an eloquent, light-hearted work, heard here in it's first recording. Paul Dessau's Guernica was written for piano in 1937 and memorialises the tragedy of that bombed city.
