The Deutsche Philharmonie Merck presents the first edition of it's InchMagic of MovieInch series with film music by various composers, including John Williams and many more. Cinematic masterpieces are showcased here, including Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, Superman, Titanic, and others. Deutsche Philharmonie Merck is named after the family of pharmacists, Merck, who in 1668 laid the foundation for the oldest pharmaceutical-chemical company in the world, today a leading science and technology company. The family's lineage includes Johann Heinrich Merck, who was a friend and sponsor of the poet Johann Wolfgang Goethe, and the family had before that always been known for their support of the arts. Deutsche Philharmonie Merck still feels the family's cultural commitment in a very special way. The orchestra has it's origins in the 'instrumental group at Merck' which was formed by music-loving employees in 1966. Over the years, the company orchestra has become one of the most competitive orchestras on the German music scene and according to the press is 'an orchestra headed straight to the top'. The early nineteenth century was an era of great stylistic changes in music, as composers searched for new forms of expression and tonal possibilities, which spurred rapid innovation in the field of instrument design and manufacturing. A larger sound spectrum and greater variety of technical possibilities became a defined ideal. Ludwig van Beethoven and Friedrich Kuhlau were musical giants of their time, both seeking to exploit fully the potential brought by these new developments. Beethoven's Serenade bends the boundaries of Classicism with impulsive dynamic changes and contrasting motifs, while Kuhlau's Grande Sonate Concertante eagerly explores a more Romantic aesthetic, containing an expressive freedom in it's virtuosic writing and rich harmonic textures. The juxtaposition of Beethoven and Kuhlau's music on this recording is inspired by the two composers' first and only encounter in Baden on the 2nd of September 1825. This charming moment in music history is remembered with a canon Beethoven wrote on the text 'Kühl, nicht lau' (cool, not lukewarm), a friendly pun on Kuhlau's name. Album Tracks 1. Despite it's title, Ratboys' new album Singin' to an Empty Chair is not defined by what's missing. Rather, it's the beginning of an important dialogue with a close loved one, vocalist Julia Steiner finds herself estranged from. The music on the band's sixth studio album - it's first for New West Records - fills the space that person left behind with 11 songs showcasing Ratboys at the peak of their powers - twangy, effervescent, as confident as they've ever been, and perhaps more emotionally interrogative than ever before. The four-piece Chicago band followed up 2023's highly acclaimed The Window by reconvening with co-producer Chris Walla to begin tracking at a rural Wisconsin cabin before taking the songs to Steve Albini's famed Electrical Audio studios in Chicago and later to Rosebud Studio in Evanston, Illinois. The results veer from bubbly power-pop on InchAnywhereInch to irresistible post-country on InchPenny in the Lake,Inch along with heart-piercing ballads like InchJust Want You to Know the TruthInch and an exhilarating detour into the extraterrestrial on InchLight Night Mountains All That,Inch which Steiner dubs the band's mammoth Inchwormhole jam.Inch Singin' to an Empty Chair also marks the first Ratboys album written since Steiner began therapy, which the singer/lyricist credits for the clarity found across the album's unflinching examinations of relationship and self. Fittingly, as the album begins by extending a hand into the void, it concludes with a scene of serenity - all while weaving candid honesty, humor, chaos, and whimsy along the way. InchIt's not all doom and gloom,Inch Steiner says. InchThe experience of making this record definitely gives me hope for whatever happens next.Inch Album Tracks 1. Open Up 2. Know You Then 3. Light Night Mountains All That 4. Anywhere 5. Penny in the Lake 6. Strange Love 7. The World, So Madly 8.
