Icelandic music of the last half century is the focus of this recording by the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge, led by it's conductor, Graham Ross. Born from his close collaboration with the native composers of the 'Land of Fire and Ice', this program sets out to explore and highlight their hypnotic soundworld, instinctively leaning towards contemplation. A prime example is the touchingly beautiful Requiem by Sigurður Sævarsson, which here receives it's world premiere recording. Album Tracks 1. Thorvaldsdóttir Ad Genua 2. This setting of the Stabat Mater, a 13th century hymn to the Virgin Mary, is written for soprano, tenor and bass soloists as well as chorus, strings and piano. The work was composed in 2009 and divides the original twenty stanzas of the text into ten movements. It describes the grief-stricken Mother of Jesus standing at the foot of cross, on which he is suffering an agonising death. The overall shape of these movements provides something of an arch structure, with similar music at the beginning and end. Similarly, a slower variation of the second movement is used for the penultimate movement. Album Tracks 1. Stabat Mater~Stabat Mater dolorosa 2. Stabat Mater~Cujus animam 3. Stabat Mater~O quam tristis 4. Stabat Mater~Quis est homo 5. Stabat Mater~Pro peccatis 6. Stabat Mater~Eja mater 7. Stabat Mater~Virgo virginum 8. Stabat Mater~Fac, ut portem 9. Stabat Mater~Christe, cum sit hinc 10. Stabat Mater~Quando corpus
