Claude Tissendier - Swingin’ Bolling 2 - Feed the Cats - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Grabbing vs. Releasing, self-assertion vs. ^#^surrender the title juxtaposes seemingly irreconcilable opposites. But it is precisely this sense of antithesis that defines the force-field mapped out by Jens Joneleit's cycle for 27 soloists, InchLe tout, le rienInch. In the instant between reading the title and hearing the first notes of the music, the expectant listener can imagine a wide-open space with a free constellation of potential sounds. How do they interrelate? Do they seek to merge into a whole, or do they drift apart into nothingness from the moment they are nudged? And what happens when the two processes happen to interlock and conflict? The listener is continuously tempted to think in terms of fresh starts. The piece evidently seeks a way to capture and illuminate each and every sonority in it's original state, if only for a fleeting instant. The result is an intractable flux that will neither countenance an interruption nor abandon it's interrogative impulse. InchLe tout, le rienInch was composed at the occasion of Ensemble Modern's 25th anniversary and first performed in Dresden in October 2005.

On Claude Bolling and Friends, the master of big band leads a small group performing classic jazz in the chamber music vein. The brilliant writing and talented musicians combine to reveal a pared down approach to the music they have been playing with excellence for over twenty-five years. Claude Bolling shows himself here to be a pianist much younger than his years would suggest, and the loving, sophisticated generosity in his playing makes this album a testament to his work as an ambassador for the vivacity that still exists in classic jazz.

For 'Cinema Hits,' Bolling, in his unique way, has managed to jazz up several classic tunes of the cinema - from 'The Sting' to 'Doctor Zhivago' to 'High Noon,' thus enabling US to see these immortal works in an unexpectedly new light. All in all, the colors are quite different without the loss of any original sparkle. Bolling Hot! - Ivan Brunet, the Observer.
