Cold Diamond & Mink - Ain't That Love/Ain't That Love (Instrumental) - 7-INCH SINGLE [7 inch Vinyl Disc]

One could hardly intuit from these fresh and flowing violin sonatas the obstacles their female composers had to face - family opposition for Mel Bonis in France and Ethel Smyth in England, institutional conservatism for Elfrida Andrée in Sweden. It has taken a century and more for that initial prejudice to fall away, and they are now beginning to attract a fair hearing for their music. What ultimately matters, of course, is not whether composers are male or female but whether they write good music, and these three sonatas - melodically expansive, rhythmically vivacious, harmonically warm - point to the musical riches that further exploration of their creators' output will uncover. The only cover tune on Carlton Jumel Smith's Inch1634 Lexington Ave.Inch album is not really a cover at all, since it was first cut by Carlton himself already 10 years ago. The sultry 2009 edition of InchI'd BetterInch, that was put out on the short-lived UK Soulchoonz tag, is a nice piece of programmed mid-tempo modern soul. The new version, now getting a 7Inch single treatment on Timmion, still sounds miles away from the polished earlier effort. It starts off with a nice guitar led beat before settling into a sweet Tighten Up groove, a funky road which still has plenty curves to explore, even for Cold Diamond & Mink, who are certainly not lifting water from this particular well for the first time. What remains naturally is Carlton's ultra-soulful vocal performance, and a message of manning up to the max, staying true to your word in front of something divine. It's not that often you hear a more recent version of a song sounding so that you would think it's the old version. Essentially, what you get is a beautiful piece of xover soul, with timeless swagger, and an instrumental with soulful legs of it's own. Album Tracks 1. I'd Better 2. I'd Better (Instrumental)

The opening rimshot drums of InchLoveliness Of YouInch by Carlton Jumel Smith and Cold Diamond & Mink have sunday soul written all over them. This easy breezy groover closes Calton's 2022 singles trilogy with a style that echoes classic Hi productions for Al Green from the early 1970's. It's clear that on Timmion Records, Carlton has found a home far away from home.Carlton's soulful demeanor is hard not to like, and if there is any truth to what he's singing here, some even seem to fall in love with it. The recipe is not complicated here, and there is no reason to keep it a secret just a steady groove by a tight rhythm section, horns that lift the beat off the ground and a voice that wraps itself around your heart. And sometimes that's all you need. Album Tracks 1. The Loveliness of You 2. The Loveliness of You (Instrumental)
