About this product
Giovanni Battista Columbro and the Orchestra Barocca Di Cremona perform Corelli's 6 Concerti Grossi, Op. VI. The Opus number VI presents itself as the 'quintessenza di una ben altrimenti fluida e ricca prassi orchestrale' ('quintessential fluent and rich orchestral practice). On the wave of the transcriptions of opus VI, in this album the musicians employed wind instruments in addition to the strings. This choice is a filological one seeing that, after years of research it has been proved that in the Corellian orchestras there was a significant presence of wind instruments. In this version, the original tonalities have been maintained (which does not often happen in other transcriptions) and the original parts of the two solo violins have been assigned to two transverse flutes as it happened in the first decades of the XVIII Century. Album Tracks 1. Concerto Grosso in D Major, No. 4 2. Concerto Grosso in D Major, No. 1 3. Concerto Grosso in F Major, No. 9 4. Concerto Grosso in C minor, No. 3 5. Concerto Grosso in C Major, No. 10 6. Concerto Grosso in G minor, No. 8

In seventeenth-century church music, features of the Renaissance tradition (polyphony, modality) coexisted with elements of Baroque innovation (harmony, tonality) and merged into the concertato style. The Salmi Concertati op. II by Father Francesco Antonio Urio included in this Vespers dedicated to the Virgin, follow this transformation with full rights. The Vesprus, here in it's first modern performance ever, shows vocal pieces for three voices of rare melodic quality where the imitative style, the counterpoint, the modal harmony, the numerous tempo changes, the various melismata and a number of diminutions reveal remarkable compositional ability. Album Tracks 1. Sinfonia in Re Maggiore (D Major) 2. Salmi Concertati, Op. 2~Domine ad Adiuvandum (Psalm No. 70) 3. Salmi Concertati, Op. 2~Dixit Dominus (Psalm No. 109) 4. Handel's Concerti Grossi contain some of the finest orchestral music of the eighteenth century. The Op. 6 collection brims with a wealth of variety, colour, and dance rhythms - Polish and Pastoral dances, courtly and fast ones - and Handel's customary self-borrowings and indeed borrowings from other composers. The combination of full orchestra with a concertino solo group of two violins and cello allows both breadth and intimacy, producing concertos in the fullest sense. On this recording Kevin Mallon incorporates the later oboe parts for Concertos Nos. 1, 2, 5 and 6, using them as a model for most of the other concertos. When the oboes are silent, flutes or recorders are added, in line with eighteenth-century practice. Album Tracks 1. A Tempo Giusto 2. Allegro 3. Adagio 4. Allegro 5. Allegro 6. Andante Larghetto 7.
