About This Item

This brand new 1/72 scale diecast model of the Republic P-47D Thunderbolt 28RA Fighter Aircraft "Dottie Mae, 511th Fighter Squadron, 405th Fighter Group" (1945) from the United States Army Air Forces is part of "The Aviation Archive" Series by Corgi. The model comes in its original unopened packaging and features a detailed exterior with landing gear, true-to-scale detailing, a display stand, and intricately crafted crew figures. Constructed from diecast metal and plastic, it offers durability and a realistic, substantial feel, with dimensions of approximately 6 inches in length and 6.75 inches in wingspan. The model accurately replicates the real aircraft with realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels, and surface details, making it ideal for collectors and military history enthusiasts. Historically, the Republic P-47D Thunderbolt "Dottie Mae," serial number 42-29150 with the code K4-S, was flown by Lt. Henry Mohr of the 511th Fighter Squadron, 405th Fighter Group during World War II. Known as the "Jug," the P-47 Thunderbolt was one of the heaviest and most durable fighters of its era, capable of sustaining significant damage and still returning its pilot safely. "Dottie Mae" played a crucial role in the European Theater of Operations, participating in key missions across France and Germany, including close air support during the Normandy invasion, D-Day, and subsequent breakout operations. Equipped for both air-to-air combat and ground attacks, the aircraft carried eight .50 caliber machine guns along with bombs and rockets, making it a versatile and formidable opponent in the skies. Its rugged construction and powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine allowed effective high-speed dives and low-level strafing runs. In the final months of the war, "Dottie Mae" continued numerous sorties against retreating German forces and took part in a celebratory flyover on May 8, 1945, Germany's surrender day. The aircraft was later downed during a post-war training flight, crashing into an Austrian lake, where it remained submerged until recovery and meticulous restoration in the early 2000s. This 1:72 scale model commemorates the bravery of Lt. Henry Mohr and the pilots who flew these remarkable aircraft, serving as a detailed tribute to the legacy of the P-47 Thunderbolt in World War II.
