About this product

Sylvie Courvoisier presents a new trio album at the height of her mastery and success. InchFree HoopsInch follows the widely celebrated trio album InchD'AgalaInch which The New York Times counted as among the best records of the year. With every concert and every album this glorious trio's modus operandi becomes more clear - Sylvie Courvoisier, Drew Gress and Kenny Wollesen play morphing music by turns intricately detailed and ambiguously wide open. The music Courvoisier writes is rigorously organized and calls for ensemble precision, as a few thorny unisono heads demonstrate. But the music also harbors a misterioso, dreamlike quality that may surface at any time, induced by a wistful ostinato or moonlit piano arpeggio stubbornly repeated, or by a quiet episode that underscores the depth of the trio's sonic space. They also do that good stuff we prize jazz for - the happy swinging, the coming together when they make complex material sing, and the flying apart when the players explore it on their own. Album Tracks 1. Free Hoops 2. Lulu Dance 3. Just Twisted 4. Requiem D'un Songe 5. As We Are 6. Birdies of Paradise 7. Galore 8. Nicotine Sarcoline 9. Highway 1

Seidener Faden -Silken Thread is WERGO's second album portrait of Younghi Pagh-Paan. The first appeared 26 years ago, and this new recording is long overdue, given the composer's increasing recognition in the field of New Music and the countless international awards she has accrued in recent years, among them the Berlin Art Prize in 2020. Born into a working class family in South Korea, Younghi Pagh-Paan has had a remarkable career she was a student in Seoul from 1965-72 before receiving a scholarship to study in Germany in 1974. One of her composition teachers was Klaus Huber, whom she later married. In 1994, Pagh-Paan was the first woman in Germany to be appointed a professor of composition. She has been an influential teacher and mentor to a younger generation and a role model for female composers around the world. Her works have been performed at the most prominent international festivals and have a strongly individual identity, combining western Modernism with elements of traditional Korean music such as microtonal variation rather than chromatic motion. The E-MEX Ensemble prepared these first recordings in close collaboration with the composer. The newer pieces arose in connection with Pagh-Paan's chamber opera InchMondschattenInch (Stuttgart, 2006) and deal with questions of human existence, mortality, and religious experience. The three older works included here, InchBIDAN-SILInch and the two InchTA-RYONGInch pieces, are anchored in the rituals and instrumental traditions of Korean folk music. Album Tracks 1. Ta-Ryong VI 2. Silbersaiten - Silver Strings 3. Wundgeträumt - Dreamsore 4. Bidan-Sil - Sidener Faden - Silken Thread 5. Ta-Ryong III - Tsi-Shin 6. Io
