Limited edition of 1000 numbered copies on translucent silver coloured 180-gram audiophile vinyl. Cranes is a dream pop/shoegaze band formed by siblings Alison and Jim Shaw who rose to stardom following a world tour with the Cure in 1992. After the influential Dedicated tag folded in 1998 they went on a two-year hiatus after which they set up their own tag Dadaphonic. Here, they released three studio albums between 2001 and 2008, of which this self-titled record is their last. Like their other Dadaphonic records, Cranes is a continuation of the band's subtler side powered by their penchant for electronic music. Shimmery synth arps and ambient strings are interspersed with the trusted drum kit and guitars, while keeping Alison Shaw's child-like vocals so integral to the band's overall sound intact. Around the Fur the follow-up to Deftones' passionate, aggressive Adrenaline, sees the California quartet expanding on the sheer rage of their earlier work, adding new, more sinister shades to their already extreme sound. Sepultura's Max Cavallero contributes guitar and vocals to InchHeadup,Inch while InchMXInch finds singer Chino trading off vocal lines with Annalynn Cunningham, (wife of Deftones' drummer Abe) in an acerbic take on the rock star mentality. Vocal acrobat Moreno attacks a variety of styles his breathy, psychotic recitations sound downright industrial, while the album's calmer, more brooding moments show his gift for haunting melody. Behind him, guitarist Stephen Carpenter's heavy wall of sound is astoundingly muscular, yet inspiringly agile. When Deftones' hellish fury hits full tilt, as it always does on this album, Moreno's voice erupts into screams which are best described as otherworldly, transforming this intense musical firestorm into a hurtling juggernaut of aggression.
