Crystar is a niche, low-budget action JRPG with a few significant flaws that really bog down the experience. The core combat gameplay is very simple, to the point that you don't really need to think about it as you play, but it can be fun if you shut your brain off. The story is actually pretty interesting, but boy oh boy does it overstay its welcome, thanks in part to the extremely tedious dungeon design. 90% of the game takes place in dungeons. The dungeons in this game get longer as you progress, but they never get more interesting. Once you've seen the first floor of the first dungeon, you've seen them all, not counting some visual changes in each dungeon. The enemy variety is miniscule, enemies are constantly recycled and recolored, and as such, the mindless combat can be either a blessing or a curse. On one hand, you can just blast through everything with ease. On the other hand, you might find yourself bored to tears having to run the 15th samey dungeon floor using the same samey skills on the same samey enemies as the last 14 floors. The story is good, but maybe not worth the tedium of actually playing the game.
