About this product
For more than three decades, David Eugene Edwards has carved out a singular path through American music. First with the gothic folk urgency of 16 Horsepower, then with the devotional intensity of Wovenhand, and more recently through the stripped-down landscape of his solo work. On his sophomore solo album Mercurial Silence, Edwards continues the path established on his 2023 debut Hyacinth, while pushing his sound into new territory through the expanded use of electronic production and layered textures. The record finds Edwards channeling the stark intensity that has defined much of his career while embracing a broader sonic palette that feels both ancient and modern. His unmistakable voice moves through layers of bowed strings, percussive drones, and spectral electronics, giving Mercurial Silence the feeling of a transmission from somewhere just beyond reach. Written and recorded in June 2025 at Edwards' studio in Denver alongside Vincent Petitjean, Mercurial Silence reflects a deepening of both process and collaboration. For mixing and production, Edwards again worked with Derek Coburn in Los Angeles, who engineered and mixed Hyacinth, creating continuity between the two records while allowing the newer material to move into more layered territory. Across it's 12 songs, Mercurial Silence refines the thematic direction first explored on his debut while widening it's focus to consider the recurring stories cultures have told about the heavens and the earth, and how those realms intersect, interact, and continually reshape one another.

David Eugene Edwards has always been larger than life. His music with innovative heavy droning folk band Wovenhand, and before that the haunting revivification of high lonesome sound antique Americana of 16 Horsepower breathed a near apocalyptic sense of urgency and power into musical archetypes long abandoned in the latter-20th Century. On his first-ever solo album under his own name, Hyacinth, David Eugene Edwards delivers a sound uniquely his own, with a vulnerability and introspection unheard from him before. Stripping back the heavy rock of his recent work with Wovenhand, Hyacinth puts the man's voice, and sparing instrumentation into the main focus. There's a somber beauty and world-weary tone throughout these songs. The album could've been considered a slight return to the more melodic sounds of 16 Horsepower's Secret South (2000) and the first, self-titled Wovenhand album (2002). But there's more going on here a rhythmic, pulsating undercurrent reminiscent of the tape loops and rudimentary rhythms of 80s Industrial post-punk as well as 808 Drill Style beats. David Tibet of Current 93's second-ever solo album, FONTELAUTUS, was originally released on a tiny art-edition lathe pressing via the Cashen's Gap tag in 2020. Now, FONTELAUTUS is available once again; this limited high-quality edition vinyl reissue by HOMALEPH, David's sub-tag on the ever-reliable and increasingly collectable House of Mythology tag. The CD version comes in a single sleeve casing, with a Japanese washi-style paper insert. Musically speaking, this album is celestial, atmospheric and stirring, far removed from anything David Tibet has released in his ever-evolving body of work, perhaps since the early 1980s.

David Sylvian and Holger Czukay are fairly eclectic and diverse musicians. In the European ambient scene, they are fixtures. They present this collection of atmospheres as a tight and cohesive soundscape. The gentle sway of the ambience is deep and comfortable. There are no dark overtones. Fans of Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, Markus Reuter and Liquid Mind will like this CD. It is an important selection for fans of electronic minimalism.1. Plight (The Spiralling Of Winter Ghosts)2. Premonition (Giant Empty Iron Vessel)3. Flux (A Big, Bright, Colourful World)4. Mutability (A New Beginning Is In The Offing)
