About this product
What humbly began as the amateur strums of a 10-year-old on the ukulele, catapulted into an expansive 60-year long career that has taken Athens stalwart, Davis Causey, everywhere from playing with Marvin Gaye, Jerry Butler, and Jackie Wilson to Derek Trucks, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson, just to name a few. Next in the long line of his musical contributions is his second album on Strolling Bones Records New Things From Old Strings, a perfect collection of songs that have followed him through time. This album is the culmination of a lifetime dedicated to loving and making music or, in Davis' words, Incha great way to almost make a living!Inch The album features old friends Randall Bramblett and Chuck Leavell plus a special appearance from Duane Allman's 1961 Gibson Les Paul (SG).InchThis started out as a form of musical therapy to get through the pandemic, but soon became something more. Most songs began with just a chord progression and grew from there with the help of the other musicians. Some songs came fully formed while others had to be coaxed into existence. These songs reflect my many influences. From Chet Atkins and Johnny Smith to Duane Allman and Mark Knopfler to Martin Taylor and many others. My mom was a great believer in me and my music being herself a writer. Once heard it said that if you steal from one source it's called plagiarism, but if you steal from a lot of sources it's called research. Davis Causey is an Athens-bred musician who has had a 60-year long career so far that has taken him everywhere from playing with Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson to writing music for Bonnie Raitt and the InchCarnyInch movie soundtrack. Davis's first on Strolling Bones Records is Pickin' on Christmas and includes a beautiful collection of instrumental Christmas classics and one original produced by Davis and Jay Smith and features musicians Jay Smith, Randall Bramblett, and Jeff Reilly. InchThis project came about in 1998 as a limited run of 100 CDs to be given as Christmas presents from Jay and myself to friends, relatives, etc. It was so special to me to collaborate with Jay on this project. He was one of the nicest and most talented musicians I've had the privilege of playing with!Unfortunately, Jay passed soon after we finished recording Pickin' On Christmas. I'm so thankful we have these recordings to keep his spirit and great playing alive for others to appreciate and enjoy! So with great love and affection, I dedicate this recording to Jay - love you brother.InchPickin 'on Christmas is set for on November 4, 2022 via Strolling Bones Records.Little Drummer BoyThe Christmas SongSilver Bells / Silent NightFollowing A StarWe Three Kings / God Rest Ye Merry GentlemenAngels We Have HeardWhat Child Is This?White Christmas

Reverend Davis is one of those figures whose creativity covered such a wide range that one can come back again and again and always find something new. This certainly proves that. There is only the one gospel song, but the interplay between voice and instrument can be heard on songs like Hesitation Blues and Candyman. The ragtime and blues playing here are definitive examples of American guitar, i.e. Walkin' Dog Blues, Twelve Sticks, Buck Rag, Buck Dance. There is hokum hilarity and novelty (the slide on Whistlin' Blues) to balance the sheer instrumental force. And there is a lot more Little Boy, Little Boy Who Made Your Britches is a song that might slip through the cracks on a compilation like this, but a careful listen reveals a piece that is so unique it is hard to categorize.
