Adopting a collaborative approach for the recording of their third album, Death Bells have returned Between Here & Everywhere, an effort that captures the cross-section of Southern California's shadowy hidden interzones, outside of the lights and luxury.The record features nine new songs that represent Will Canning and Remy Veselis' continual growth, as well as accompaniment by an experienced cast of contributors on keys, strings, piano, and operatic backup vocals. After swapping hemispheres, Australian outfit Death Bells have found a new home in Los Angeles, emerging with a new album of fervent guitar-driven rock, stripped of gloom and punching through with a new sense of positivity. New Signs of Life, their debut for Dais Records, finds Death Bells using a DIY pedigree to plunder the conventions of Inchrock musicInch with a saxophone along for the mission. Rather than leaping genres or formats, New Signs of Life is refined and nuanced-a methodology built on process, craft, and perspective. Following their 2017 debut, Standing at the Edge of the World, and follow-up single InchEchoes,Inch Death Bells left their hometown of Sydney for the United States. Energized by impulse, extensive touring and exploration led to the formation of an ambitious six-piece band that eventually coalesced as a collaboration between founding members Will Canning and Remy Veselis. With Canning and Veselis becoming the engine, Death Bells began to employ several underground mainstay musicians to complete their live presentation, including Cortland Gibson (Dock Hellis), Colin Knight (Object of Affection), and on occasion Brian Vega (Fearing). Revitalized and centered, Death Bells released the single InchAround the BendInch in 2019, before workshopping material that would eventually comprise their second full-length effort. As much as Standing at the Edge of the World was an energized disclosure informed by fresh naivete, New Signs of Life harnesses those initial sparks, cloaking the threads of Death Bells with authority, allowing each of the nine tracks which embody New Signs of Life to become rich streamlined vehicles. The eponymous lead single is a grandiose statement, influenced by the theme song of HBO's classic television program Six Feet Under. The two musicians have been working on the Winterreise for several years now and have decided relatively early on to make a recording of the cycle together. They would like to address young people with their interpretation, as many of these people might still have fresh experiences with lovesickness. Moreover, the protagonist is also a rather young man. Hewat-Craw InchI don't think there is a more iconic song cycle than Winterreise. We wanted to announce our entry into the international song scene with a bang. This is certainly a challenge with such a prominent catalogue of recordings lining the way wonderful artists who have given the cycle it's unique stamp. Now we have put our own stamp on it. Each interpretation of the previous artists is very individual, but the cycle is enticingly unique. There is no story or substantial plot. The real story ends before the cycle begins. The cycle is an extended epilogue that delves deep into the human psyche, revealing loneliness and despair, but also perhaps a glimmer of hope. I would challenge any artist who has no interest in exploring these themes. Inch
