It was their first record with new lead vocalist Natalie Maines, and became their breakthrough commercial success. It received diamond status by the RIAA on February 20, 2003 in the United States, having shipped 14 million units worldwide, while spending more than six years in the Australian ARIA music charts Country Top 20. At the 41st Grammy Awards, the album was awarded two Grammy Awards out of three nominations. Arguably their finest album, this follow-up to Opiate showcases Tool at their best, assisted by clean, crisp production, without the muddiness of Aenima. Edgy guitar riffs are complemented by spitting, heavy bass, especially on InchSoberInch and InchCrawl AwayInch. Lyrically, Tool are at their vitriolic best, targeting religious hypocrisy (InchIntolerance,Inch InchSoberInch; always a popular theme), the loss of innocence and it's consequences (InchPrison S*xInch), and deliberate ignorance (InchSwamp SongInch). Henry Rollins makes a guest appearance on InchBottom,Inch which, along with Inch4 Degrees,Inch deals with questions of identity.
