About this product
Long before taking on the name tofubeats and navigating through the world of J-pop, Yusuke Kawai recorded under the name dj newtown. This project found the electronic artist creating jittery breakcore tracks out of a wide array of samples, inspired in part by his very own upbringing in a Kobe adjacent 'new town,' a sort of planned suburb in Japan occupied by big box stores and not much else. Early releases popped up on Maltine Records and served as some of that netlabels finest offerings, combining sliced-up samples of anime music or Kawai's own Auto-tune-glazed singing over galloping beats.Plenty of these sonic elements appeared in tofubeats' music over the next decade, but the dj newtown project itself went quiet in 2011, save for some sporadic live gigs. Yet eight years later, dj newtown returns with WEST MEMBERS, an all-new album featuring an extra layer of intrigue - every cut here samples a tofubeats' song from the past decade, including ones as recently as last year's Run. It's not just a throwback, but a chance to approach his tofubeats work from a new angle too. - otaquest Album Tracks 1. Zer 2. Imm (Fum) 3. Pos 4. Wha 5. Sow 6. Ibe 7. Sho 8. Sto 9. Tou 10. Bet 11. Planet Mu welcomes back DJ Nate, a full nine years after his debut album. DJ Nate is from the West Side of Chicago and was the tag's first ever footwork signing back in 2010. His strange, sample-heavy sound was the acid test to introduce footwork to a wider audience, outside Chicago and certain aficianados, and it created the opportunity for Planet Mu to the two InchBangs & WorksInch compilations and introduce the world to such artists as DJ Rashad, Jlin and Traxman. Since InchDa Trak GeniousInch was released, DJ Nate has released R&B and Hip Hop with a strong local following. The highlight of this part of his career was InchGucci GogglesInch, an underground hit outside Chicago. His rise was slowed after he was paralysed from the neck down two years ago, an accident which he's recently recovered from. This selection of tracks feels like they're in direct continuity with his debut, with his trademark yearning vocal samples, cutting them into strange new pitched up and down musical motifs.A Bring Your Best CrackYou Ain't Ready To BattleCome BackOh WoooaaahGet Rid Of EmFuck DatWat U Won't 2 DoGo KrazyGet BackB Get It Right HoeJust Be TruuPack EmAww Baby What U WaitnTalk 2 MePlanet MuGet Off Me (Betta Get Back)La Happy Day
