Don Lanphere - Get Happy - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

TCQ (Ryan Oliver, Tim Hamel, Alex Coleman) is a Canadian jazz group, with a sound firmly rooted in the '60s hard bop movement. During the fall of 2021, while on tour in the west coast of Canada with Bernie Senensky (Piano), and Joe Poole (Drums), the group performed a brand new set of original compositions to live audiences which subsequently became this 8-track studio album, The Path.

The master saxophonist, a sure-fire pleaser, seasoned from over 50 years of topflight performing and recording, is heard here with his band of 10 years, the Grammy-nominated New Stories trio (Marc Seales, Doug Miller and John Bishop) performing a program of jazz and classic pop standards. Selected as one of the top 5 CDs of 2001 by Ira Gitler in Jazz Times, the track InchAlone TogetherInch was also selected by the Japanese jazz scholar Yasukuni Terashima for a cut on his best of 2001 CD compilation, InchJazz Bar 2002Inch produced by Tokyo's DIW Records. Originally released in 2001.

Few veterans of the classic bebop era were still active in 2000, and even fewer were still in their musical prime. Don Lanphere is a major exception. Rather than just recreating the past (which in his case includes leading a date that featured Fats Navarro), Lanphere always looks ahead. InchLike a Bird,Inch is one more in a string of excellent Don Lanphere recordings made since 1980, in this instance using the classic tenor/organ/guitar/drums grouping for the first time in his long and storied career. The boppish saxes of Lanphere, the clean strumming of Bay-area guitarist Mimi Fox along with former Motown drummer Mel Brown's and Barney McClure's organ groove and soul, produce a swinging, unique group sound. Originally released in 2000.
