Charles Mingus's consummate musicianship made live performance a tricky undertaking, his perfectionism often clashing with variables he couldn't fully control. In this set at Carnegie Hall, his gift as an arranger is most evident, his artful renditions of two Duke Ellington songs acting as a conversation between two musical giants, instead of just a retelling. Known to be thunderous, he was often just electrifying.

Vinyl LP pressing. In 1968, Johnnie Taylor 's provocative single, InchWho's Making LoveInch gave the newly independent Stax Records it's first major hit. The song peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helped to bolster the tag's profile. The album Who's Making Love was released months later, and not only featured the title track but also an irresistible collection of bluesy songs penned by Booker T. Jones, Bettye Crutcher, Steve Cropper and the inimitable team of Isaac Hayes and David Porter.

Born April 18, 1930, Dénes Kovács began violin lessons at six, becoming Dezsó Rados' student at the Fodor Music School two years later. When he was fourteen, he began his studies at Budapest's Liszt Academy of Music in the class of Ede Zathureczky. Graduating in 1951, he began his professional career, playing first in the army's Central Arts Ensemble, and for a decade, leader of the Hungarian Opera House Orchestra. In 1955, he took first prize in the Carl Flesch competition in London, inaugurating an international career that lasted for the rest of his life. He performed widely and recorded the great works of the violin Concertos, chamber and solo repertoire from the baroque period to the present, including all the Beethoven sonatas and string trios, Bartok's works for violin, and many concertos by his Hungarian contemporaries. He began teaching at the Liszt Academy of Music in 1957, becoming head of the violin department in 1959, and professor five years later. He was appointed Rector of the Academy in 1968. The present features a stunning program of historical recordings with works by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn, and Tchaikovsky.
