About this product
exciting reading of Arnold's finest symphony from unexpected sources, coupled with enchanting CD debutants... The 5th is a marvellous symphony, perhaps his greatest - powerfully argued, confidently structured, and full of memorable invention. It is good to see it so well played and recorded in Munich, guided by Douglas Bostock who comes into his own in four extra works, which are all first recordings. Divertimento- a splendidly characterful triptych; there is much outrageous fun in the St Trinian's score - bursting with irreverent ideas and effects; and the lovely, nostalgic 'Sarabande' of Solitaire (one of his most touching tunes).(Gramophone) Album Tracks 1. Bostock Symphony No.5, Op.74; I. Tempestuoso 2. II. Andante Con Moto 3. III. Con Fuoco 4. IV. Risoluto 5. Divertimento No.2, Op.75; I. Fanfare Allegro 6. II. Nocturne Lento 7. III. Chaconne Allegro Con Spirito 8. Symphonic Study Machines, Solitaire (Excerpts from the Ballet) 9. Sarabande 10. Polka 11. Homage to the Queen (Ballet Excerpts); Prelude & Opening Scene 12. Dance of the Insects 13. Fire Dance 14. Finale 15. Little Suite No.2, Op.78; I. Overture Allegro Moderato 16. II. Ballad Andantino 17. III. Dance Vivace 18. a truly desirable project with the orchestra and recording team getting well into their stride in this cracker.(MusicWeb) [Gipps] Inchthoroughly likeable creation... The spirit of RVW hovers benignly, and well worth getting to know, especially when given with such vigour and obvious affectionInch [Butterworth] InchManchester-born... Symphony was first heard under Barbirolli, though it's origins trace back to Sibelius's Sixth... copious allusions to the Finnish master... powerfully evocative of the North, strongly argued and confidently scored... a most enterprising pairingInch (Gramophone) Album Tracks 1.
