Dr Dog - Abandoned Mansion - VINYL LP

Carroll - Carroll [VINYL LP] date 11/06/2015

For more than two decades, Dr. Dog have maintained a shared devotion to theunruly alchemy of making music. When it came time to create their eleventhstudio album, the Philadelphia-bred band adopted an entirely new way ofworking together, embracing a multilayered process designed to foster adeeper synergy among it's five members (bassist Toby Leaman, lead guitaristScott McMicken, rhythm guitarist Frank McElroy, keyboardist Zach Miller, anddrummer Eric Slick). After beginning that journey with a close-knit session atLeaman's uncle's cabin in the Pennsylvania woods, Dr. Dog steadily madetheir way toward the joyfully unfettered psych-rock of their new self-titled LP.Mixed by multi-Grammy-winner Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell, Drive-ByTruckers), Dr. Dog finds McMicken taking the helm as producer for the firsttime in the history of the decidedly egalitarian band. True to the eclectic spiritthat's always animated the band, Dr. Dog's 11 tracks shift from soul to surf-rockto symphonic pop with an exuberance made all the more powerful by theirrevitalized creative energy. InchThere isn't really a concept or cohesive idea thatunifies this collection of tunes,Inch says McMicken. InchIn the end it's about us beingtogether, doing the work, and showing up as our truest selves.Inch Their first fulllength since 2018's Critical Equation, Dr. Dog reveals a band - over twentyyears into their storied career - growing together and evolving, fully committedto the singular work of dreaming up songs that brighten the mind and expandthe soul.

Vinyl LP pressing. 'I feel like I'm in a totally new band right now' says Dr. Dog guitarist/singer Scott McMicken. It's a bold declaration considering he's been co-fronting the beloved indie outfit for a decade-and-a-half, but it cuts straight to the heart of the intense and transformative experience behind the group's brilliant album, Critical Equation. Produced by Gus Seyffert (Bedouine, Michael Kiwanuka), Critical Equation is the most infections and adventurous collection Dr. Dog has laid to tape yet. The record was born from a journey of doubt and discovery, a heavy, sometimes painful reckoning that ultimately brought the band closer together with more strength and clarity than ever before. Call it an existential awakening, call it a dark night of the soul, whatever it was, it fueled one of the most fertile creative periods in the group's history.
