USS Missouri (BB-63), an Iowa-class battleship, was the last battleship commissioned by the United States Navy in 1944 and is best known as the site of Japan’s surrender on September 2, 1945, ending World War II. Missouri participated in the Pacific Theater, including the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, shelled the Japanese home islands, and later served in the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. Decommissioned in 1955, she was reactivated and modernized in 1984, providing fire support during Operation Desert Storm in 1991.
