The Britpop era brought the world a bunch of great records, including Echobelly's second album On. Often compared to Blondie and known for their influences from The Smiths, they recorded some melodic and intense alternative guitar rock for this record. The album reached number 4 in the UK charts and including their famous singles InchKing of the KerbInch (about homelessness and prostitution) and InchGreat ThingsInch (about the future). Glen Johanssen is a superb musician and provided gritty, stained backdrops for Sonya Madan's otherworldly vocals. Memorable hooks and song who nesting into you head, it's the power of Echobelly. On is a worthy follow-up to it's predecessor and one of the better Britpop albums circulating in the mid-90s. Most prominent in Echobelly's success formula is the combination of Sonya Madan's unique voice and the outstanding lyrics. With Adam Schlesinger's untimely passing from COVID-19 in 2020, the IVY trio neverthought there would be another album. But the band had actually been storing a largetrove of unfinished songs and demos in a Rhode Island storage locker dating back totheir beginnings. In 2023, while prepping the recent vinyl releases of their catalog, AndyChase and Dominique Durand took a trip to Rhode Island and listened to the tapes theyhad left there all those years ago; tapes labeled with notes like InchAdam's Wacky Idea 1997Inch,InchStupid Cat 2005Inch or InchThis one might be good for Shallow Hal.InchThe pair, along with their longtime friend Bruce Driscoll (Freedom Fry), decided to returnto the studio and flesh out the bones of those recordings. While they would never feelright about putting out an album under the IVY moniker without Adam, they realized theydidn't have to. Around the Fur the follow-up to Deftones' passionate, aggressive Adrenaline, sees the California quartet expanding on the sheer rage of their earlier work, adding new, more sinister shades to their already extreme sound. The opening InchMy Own Summer (Shove It),Inch serves as an introduction to the album's sonic theme sinewy guitars and eerie whispers alternate with fast, violent crunch. Sepultura's Max Cavallero contributes guitar and vocals to InchHeadup,Inch while InchMXInch finds singer Chino trading off vocal lines with Annalynn Cunningham, (wife of Deftones' drummer Abe) in an acerbic take on the rock star mentality. Vocal acrobat Moreno attacks a variety of styles his breathy, psychotic recitations sound downright industrial, while the album's calmer, more brooding moments show his gift for haunting melody. Behind him, guitarist Stephen Carpenter's heavy wall of sound is astoundingly muscular, yet inspiringly agile. When Deftones' hellish fury hits full tilt, as it always does on this album, Moreno's voice erupts into screams which are best described as otherworldly, transforming this intense musical firestorm into a hurtling juggernaut of aggression.
