About This Item

Part of the explosion of black entertainment that occured on the West Coast in the early 1940's, which led to an eruption of independent record labels and the birth of the R&B record industry, California was the breeding ground for the recording careers for a host of strong, talented women performers - among them was Effie Smith, a talented singer and comedienne whose career stretched from the early 1930's until the early 1970's. Early on Effie worked in Lionel Hampton, Erskine Hawkins and Benny Carter's orchestras, and later on with small bands organized by Johnny Otis and her husband, John Criner, as well as R&B legends Roy Milton and Buddy Harper. With the advent of rock n' roll in the mid-fifties, Effie made several records with The Squires for the Los Angeles based Vita Records imprint. The Squires vocal group at the time included Don & Dewey, who went on to fame after recording a couple of 45's backing Effie with her husband, John Criner's band. Effie's son, Fred Sledge Smith, went on to become an important R&B/Soul producer and songwriter in Los Angeles. Presented here is Effie's classic single, InchChampagne Mind With A Soda Water IncomeInch b/w InchWater! Water!,Inch featuring backing by the Squires. The session was recorded on October 24 of 1955 and the single released in March of 1956. The single has been newly remastered from the original tapes for this exclusive . Album Tracks 1. Deftones - Around the Fur - VINYL LP
    4.6(12)

Around the Fur the follow-up to Deftones' passionate, aggressive Adrenaline, sees the California quartet expanding on the sheer rage of their earlier work, adding new, more sinister shades to their already extreme sound. The opening InchMy Own Summer (Shove It),Inch serves as an introduction to the album's sonic theme sinewy guitars and eerie whispers alternate with fast, violent crunch. Sepultura's Max Cavallero contributes guitar and vocals to InchHeadup,Inch while InchMXInch finds singer Chino trading off vocal lines with Annalynn Cunningham, (wife of Deftones' drummer Abe) in an acerbic take on the rock star mentality. Vocal acrobat Moreno attacks a variety of styles his breathy, psychotic recitations sound downright industrial, while the album's calmer, more brooding moments show his gift for haunting melody. Behind him, guitarist Stephen Carpenter's heavy wall of sound is astoundingly muscular, yet inspiringly agile. When Deftones' hellish fury hits full tilt, as it always does on this album, Moreno's voice erupts into screams which are best described as otherworldly, transforming this intense musical firestorm into a hurtling juggernaut of aggression. This LP version comes pressed on 180 gram vinyl. Album Tracks 1. My Own Summer (Shove It) 2. Lhabia 3. Mascara 4. Around the Fur 5. Rickets 6. Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) 7. Lotion 8. Dai the Flu 9. Headup 10. MX
