About this product
On her fifth album, Ellen Arkbro brings her instincts for structurally elegant songwriting to extended improvisations. Her durational works move like water They can be choppy on the surface, disturbed by harsh gusts of wind, or suspensefully still, belying the roiling forces deep below. Her towering organ chords billow and undulate, seeking internally discordant phrases and resolving them incrementally, slipping against one another with a luxuriant friction. While Arkbro's For Organ and Brass (2017) took a formalist approach, testing the mechanical limits of it's instruments, and Sounds While Waiting (2023) took a contextual one, offering up an explicit (if tongue-in-cheek) social-spatial function, Nightclouds is unabashedly Romantic and representational. Arkbro, steering directly into the storm, conjures the mortal awe of the sublime. LP

Night Voice, the new by San Francisco composer Mark Winges, is a collection of warm sounding and texturally rich works featuring the viola in a rich variety of solo, duo, and trio contexts. Winges' music has been described as 'stylistically adventurous in setting, but strongly beholden to conventional means' (Gramophone) and 'a composer with the skill and self-confidence to write music that is clear, direct, and at times even simple, but not at all simple-minded' (San Francisco Classical Voice).

?A disc for harp not mainly addressed to harpists, but to all contemporaty music lovers. A disc for harp with compositions not by harpist-composers, but from composers in the canon. A spectacular Concerto for Harp and Orchestra (Brussels Philharmonic) composed in 2022 by the American composer Geoffrey Gordon is the core of the recording. The Concerto is preceded and followed by solo harp music by two living composers (Toshio Hosokawa and James MacMillan) and by the famous In a Landscape by John Cage. Two world premiere recordings.
