Elsa Grether - Poeme Mystique - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

2021 sees the 500th anniversary of the death of Josquin Des Pres, the most celebrated composer of his day. Dominique Visse and the Ensemble Clément Janequin are recording a selection of his chansons from one of the most important editions of his works, Tylman Susato's Septiesme livre de Chansons published in 1545. This edition bears witness to the diversity of Josquin's chanson writing, but above all to the melancholy and sorrow so present in his works, and is clearly a tribute, as is also evident in the two Deplorations on his death, Musae Jovis by Nicolas Gombert and O mors inevitabilis by Hieronymus Vinders. This recording endeavors to present a Josquin legacy, a post mortem illustration of his chanson oeuvre, in remembrance of his musical genius. It has also enabled Dominique Visse and the Ensemble Clement Janequin to express their profound musical passion for this major Renaisance composer who has accompanied them for more than 40 years. In 1928 Maurice Ravel described the violin and the piano as Inchessentially incompatibleInch. Yet by then he had already composed for those instruments two sonatas (one of which was published posthumously), Tzigane, and the Berceuse sur le nom de [Gabriel] Fauré - a miraculous output for a supposedly mismatched duo. Written for the most part in the early twentieth century, these works reflect Ravel's interests and influences, including Spain, jazz, blues, foxtrot and Hebrew songs. All of these pieces show Ravel's modesty and poetry, and his marvelous ability to bring enchantment to our world. Elsa Grether and David Lively present Ravel's complete works for violin and piano, including two world premiere recordings Gustave Samazeuilh's arrangement of the Adagio assai from the Piano Concerto, and a transcription by André Asselin of the mischievous Five o'Clock Foxtrot from L'Enfant et les Sortilèges. Album Tracks 1. Ravel Piano Concerto in G Major II. Adagio Assai 2. Ravel Violin Sonata, M.77 I. Allegretto 3. Ravel Violin Sonata, M.77 II. Blues. Moderato 4. Ravel Violin Sonata, M.77 III. Themes of art song, poetry and spirituality run throughout Poème Mystique, the second solo album by Korean-American violinist Danbi Um. Following Danbi's acclaimed solo debut album Much Ado - a showcase for her virtuosity and gilded tone - Poème Mystique explores works of lyrical beauty and profound personal expression. Richard Strauss' Violin Sonata, written in the year he met his future wife, is imbued with romance and intimacy. Ernest Bloch's Second Violin Sonata, the title work of the album, is by turns ecstatic, spiritual and fantasy-like. Inspired by a dream, Bloch incorporates a vast range of spirituality, including motifs from his Jewish-themed works, the Gregorian Credo, Mass Kyrie and traditional Amen.Danbi weaves two shorter works amongst the sonatas. Gabriel Fauré's Après un rêve (InchAfter a dreamInch), originally a French art song, becomes an exquisite song without words in this transcription for violin. The album concludes with Franz Schubert's Ave Maria, likewise originally for voice and piano, presented here in an arrangement by August Wilhelm.Danbi's refined collaborator is Finnish pianist Juho Pohjonen. Together they deliver a performance that is at once technically virtuosic and emotionally nuanced. Album Tracks 1. Violin Sonata in E flat Op. 18~I. Allegro, ma non troppo 2.
