Flutist, composer, and teacher Paul Taffanel (1844-1908) was to have a decisive influence on the development of chamber music for winds in France. In 1879 he founded the Société de musique de chambre pour instruments à vent (Society of Chamber Music for Wind Instruments). The organization's objective was to expand and promote chamber music repertoire for winds. On this recording, the Oslo Kammerakademi performs chamber works for winds by composers Charles Gounod, Charles Koechlin, Florent Schmitt, Théodore Gouvy, and Vincent d'Indy, several of which were composed for the Société de musique de chambre pour instruments à vent.

?Very little is known about António Pereira da Costa (c. 1697-1770), though the exceptional quality of his only surviving compositions - 12 Concerti grossi - earns him pride of place. He held the post of Chapel Master of the Cathedral of Funchal, the highest musical position in the Portuguese island of Madeira. Pereira da Costa's Concerti are the only set of Concerti grossi of Portuguese provenance identified to date. They were largely inspired by Corelli's, but frequently reveal an unmistakable InchIberianInch flavour. These works embody the charm and freshness of a truly exquisite Inchtropical BaroqueInch. Ensemble Bonne Corde presents the first recording of these pieces, which are a milestone in Portuguese eighteenth century instrumental music.

Gloria Coates's personal sound world is unlike any other in contemporary music. Her 'Piano Quintet' is rooted in the poetry of fellow American pioneer Emily Dickinson, with half of the quartet tuned a quarter-tone higher than the other, the strange beauty of the music emerging in glacial landscapes and shimmering microtones. Coates's 'Symphony No. 10' evokes the archaeological ruins of a Celtic tribe, inspiring a torrent of dramatic percussion and long held tones that curve and shake in a moving body of sound. Gloria Coates is the most prolific female symphonist in musical history, and Naxos has an emerging series of her symphonic, chamber and other major works.
