Robert Kahn was born in Mannheim, Germany in 1865 and died in Biddenden, England in 1951. An influential professor of music at the Berlin Hochschule. His compositional style was along the lines of Mendelssohn, Schuman and Brahms, he was an admirer of Reger, whose contrapuntalism no doubt had an influence. He avoided large scale romantic forms, and became famed for his songs, choral works, chamber music and the huge Tagebuch in Tönen, (Music from the Tree of Life) a collection of solo piano works, suites for piano and lieder that run to over 1100 pieces. With the rise of the Nazis, Khan was branded InchdegenerateInch by the National Socialists. He was thrown out of his teaching positions, and in 1937 left for the UK, settling in Kent and composing right up to his death. This album from the Ensemble Émigré, is a fascinating introduction to a composer that political extremism and hatred tried, and failed, to erase. It was on InchFalling Apart,Inch off Lagwagon's 2005 full-length Blaze, that frontman Joey Cape first committed the word 'railer' to tape, but in fact it's a term that the California band has been using for a long time amongst themselves. Now it's become the title of the influential punk five-piece's ninth album. As Cape explains, Railer is Incha funny word from childhood that means silly bad, like lameInch and it captures the sense of throwback that flows throughout it's 12 songs. Unlike the last few Lagwagon albums, Railer was written in an incredibly condensed period of time, in an attempt to capture the spirit of the band's early days. And it worked. While songs like InchStealing Light,Inch InchDangerous AnimalInch and InchDark MatterInch bristle with a raw, ragged and pure energy that's unusual for any band to have after almost 30 years of existence, these tracks also directly harken back to the band's early days.
'La Bohème' is one of the most bewitching of operas, with it's smooth lines, poignant libretto, and sheer musicality. One of Puccini's masterpieces, of course. This is the version featuring Maria Callas as Mimi, supported by a fine cast. Giuseppe Di Stefano sang Rodolfo, Rolando Panerai took the role of Marcello, and Anna Moffo sang Musetta. The key to whether or not 'La Bohème' satisfies, of course is the quality of the singing and orchestral support. The coupling of Di Stefano and Callas in this recording is close to perfection. Anna Moffo's voice is in it's glorious youthful richness and with an excellent La Scala Orchestra under the baton of Antonino Votto this is one of the most interesting recorded versions of 'La Bohème' ever!
