About this product
In the courts of the 15th century, music was a constant companion. The chanson was a daily pleasure, a vehicle for poetry and passion, a remedy for pain and sublimated the richness of amorous relationships. The chanson was perhaps the musical form in which Dufay, despite being a man of the Church, best expressed his immense talent. He was seen as an absolute master among his peers, owing to the perfection of his writing and it's intense expressiveness, and he enriched the history of music with a masterly oeuvre that went far beyond the stylistic boundaries of the time. His 80 chansons show great diversity and allow us to appreciate the constant evolution of the aesthetic of the genre. The Ensemble Gilles Binchois present a program of 2 selections in which courtly love finds it's most beautiful expression and refinement. Album Tracks 1. Dufay Par Droit Je Puis Bien Complaindre Et Gemir 2. Dufay Dona Gentile, Bella Come L'oro 3. Dufay Belle, Que Vous Ay Je Mesfait 4. Dufay Les Douleurs Dont Me Sens Tel Somme 5. This program focuses on the Missa pro defunctis by the composer Charles d'Argentil. Recorded for the first time here, it is one of only a dozen musical settings of the liturgy of the dead written before 1550 to have survived to this day. Little-known today, Charles d'Argentil, who worked in the prestigious Papal Chapel in Rome, was a key figure in the French Renaissance, as well as in the establishment of musical settings of the Requiem for papal ceremonies. His setting sits alongside the three Lamentations du samedi saint by Claudin de Sermisy, composer to the French royal chapel under François I, and Jehan Barra's Salve Regina. The Gilles Binchois ensemble here sheds light on an all-too-often overlooked part of musical history, through the generation that directly followed Josquin des Prés. The art of these three composers bears witness to the high level of mastery attained by that productive and talented generation. Album Tracks 1. D'argentil Missa Pro Defunctis I. Introit 2. D'argentil Missa Pro Defunctis II. Kyrie 3. D'argentil Missa Pro Defunctis III. Séquence 4. D'argentil Missa Pro Defunctis IV. Pie Jesu 5. D'argentil Missa Pro Defunctis V. Sanctus 6.
