About this product

As a boy, Francesco Cavalli was a member of San Marco Basilica's Chapel, then directed by Claudio Monteverdi, from whom he probably received tuition. In time Cavalli's fame as an operatic composer spread across Europe and he succeeded Monteverdi in San Marco to reach the apex of success in Venice. He also wrote sacred music, published in two great printed collections. The first collection, published in 1656, contains his Missa a 8 voci Concertata, an imposing and magnificent work of exceptional complexity for eight soloists, two four-voiced choirs and many instrumentalists. In this recording it is performed in the context of an All Saints' Day liturgy by Ensemble Locatelli, directed by Cavalli scholar, Bruno Gini.

Locatelli - Sei Concerti a Quattro Opera Vii - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The Baroque Ensemble InchCarlo Antonio Marino,Inch directed by Natale Arnoldi, already protagonist of important Classical and late Baroque productions, within this album is faced with the concerts from the seventh opera by Pietro Antonio Locatelli, well known composer and violinist from Bergamo. When it appeared, this collection was not particularly successful; probably the mixture of different musical styles in the Concertos was not appreciated by the public, which by then was moving towards the new sensitivity of the galant style. Op. 7, in any case, is an excellent and occasionally brilliant work of Locatelli's a musician who, in spite of the fact that in 1741 he had already attained fame and glory, did not hesitate to run the risk of attempting to renew the waning Italian Concerto, by experimenting with approaches that might accommodate the new trends, without however denying his own origins.

Visentin Oberti Ensemble Pietro Antonio Locatelli - Motets & Stabat Mater - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The autograph reference InchPer la Sig. Ra GeltrudaInch on the manuscript of Vivaldi's motet InchClarae stellae, scintillateInch has long aroused the curiosity of researchers. By years of research around the Vivaldi expert Michael Talbot is now revealed who this InchSignora GeltrudaInch is Geltruda della Violetta was a girl from the Venetian orphanage La Pietà, where Vivaldi worked for over a decade. Geltruda probably had an exceptionally beautiful voice that quickly attracted the interest of important personalities. Vivaldi's motet dedicated to Geltrude was commissioned by the Marquis Bentivoglio of Ferrara, who was Geltrude's patron. The unusual voice of Geltruda is described as being particularly delicate and was probably especially effective in expressive and less virtuoso pieces. Vivaldi adapted to this style in his composition, which Marquis Bentivoglio expressly requested for his commissioned work. This style of writing is also found in other pieces, most likely also written for Geltruda. The experienced contralto Alessandra Visentin is active at many of Europe's major opera houses and presents here with her first solo album a special jewel in terms of repertoire and interpretation.
