Even though this is not a G-series lens...it is surprisingly effective. Super light and compact, and the picture quality is way beyond what I expected for such an inexpensive lens. Would highly recommend it, especially for someone just starting out and looking for a really practical prime lens that can be used in various settings.

Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 Review Performance The Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 offers good image quality with sharp centers and nice bokeh at f/1.8. The Sony 50mm f/1.8 is a great budget-friendly prime lens that pairs nicely with my Sony A7C II, offering sharp images, beautiful background blur, and a lightweight design that complements the camera's compact body. While the autofocus is a bit slow and can hunt in low light, especially for video, it performs well enough for portraits and general photography, especially with the A7C II’s excellent eye-AF. It’s not the most premium-feeling lens, but for the price, it delivers impressive image quality and is a solid choice for beginners or anyone looking for an affordable prime.

nice lens

I got this lens probably for the same reason you're looking into it.. its the cheapest lens sony makes. It takes beautiful pictures and is a great beginer lens. The auto focus isn't the fastest, but the quality of picture if youre patient with it is still suburp.

Good lense for the price

Good lense for the price. I use this lense for my kids portraits and my barber pictures. It does everything i need it to do. I read some reviews talking about how slow it is in autofocus and the picture quality and my reply is u get wat u pay for. Its one of the cheapest lenses sony makes. Nonetheless a great lense for the price i have absolutely no issue with this lense at all. I paired it w/ a sony a7riv simply to jus have something to shoot with upon purchase until i can get another lense because I completely switched from canon and im starting from scratch. This lense on 50 full frame is waaay wider than on my canon crop sensor so it took some getting used to but it literally was jus an adjustment. Good buy

Absolutely get it as your first lense

I took a year tour to South Korea and let me tell you that this has been my go to lense for a majority of my time. I work with the Sony A6000 and although the photos will be cropped, that didn't stop me from getting what I wanted. After working with a the two standard lenses, having this in my case was a godsend and had me appreciate photography so much more.

Fast prime for an unbelievable price

Ignore the people saying this lens is junk. For a 50mm prime 1.8 that can be had for under $200 there is nothing else that comes close. Paired with my A7iii I'm almost always happy with the result. The af is slow and a little noisy but it never misses. Well worth the $170 paid on sale.

Nifty fifty for Sony E-Mount!

What can I say? It’s a nifty fifty. The picture quality is great for how cheap it is. It’s also super compact so it’s great for travel or street photography. It’s a fixed 50mm focal length so you will have to move around to get the composition you want, but that in the end makes you a better photographer I believe.

Decent starter Prime

I actually really like this lens for the price. It's a great beginner prime. Images are reasonably sharp and bokeh is good. I shoot on a Sony A6400 so there is a 1.5x crop from my APSC sensor but Images are still outstanding with this lens. However, focusing can be slow to find the subject. Another reason for the 4 stars is the lens has some green or purple color fringing in images. This isn't much of an issue because I can remove most in post. I still highly recommend this lens for beginners.

The quality is great for the price. I have already seen a huge improvement in my photography. Especially in lower light settings that my kit lens really struggled with!

Great budget lens for Sony
As other reviews point out, the autofocus speed (slow) and noise (loud) cannot be understated. If these things don't matter to you and you are looking for that nifty-fifty lens on a budget, don't hesitate. I bought this just to have the 50mm option in my kit, knowing I'll eventually upgrade. It's a great lens to use for starting out at this focal length.

Don’t let the price fool you–this is an awesome lens! I use it for both video and photography, and it performs exceptionally well for both. It delivers sharp images, fast and reliable autofocus, and is great in low-light conditions. Highly recommend for any photographer/videographer who wants a prime lens but doesn’t want to break the bank.
